Sri Lanka’s Pavan Rathnayake was the major difference between Pakistan and the semi-final spot in the T20 World Cup 2026. His brilliant knock of 58 runs off 37 balls, with four fours and three sixes, helped Sri Lanka easily surpass the 147-run mark to knock Pakistan out of the tournament

Notably, Rathnayake’s run in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2026 has been one of the very few positives for Sri Lanka in their miserable campaign. He has also cemented his place at the number four for his side in the T20 internationals.

Although Sri Lanka lost the game against Pakistan, Rathnayake happened to be one of the highlights of this clash in Sri Lanka’s favour. Hence, here in this article, we’ll have a look at the entire journey of Pavan Rathnayake, whose valiant effort ended Pakistan’s semi-final hopes in the T20 World Cup 2026

Early life and beginning of cricketing journey

Pavan Rathnayake, the Colombo-born talent, polished his cricket skills in the city's Mahanama College. It was the same college where Rathnayake completed his education. Prior to that, he also headlined the Sri Lankan cricketing circuit for his promising performances at the local and school-level in Colombo.

Later, he started his First-Class career with the Police Sports Club in 2019. Pavan Rathnayake announced his arrival in Sri Lanka’s domestic circuit with an amazing century at the age of just 17 years and 189 days. With this ton, he also became the youngest Sri Lankan to score a first-class century.

Besides that, Pavan Rathnayake became the youngest Sri Lankan to play an individual knock of 150 runs in the First-Class cricket. He achieved this feat while representing Police Sports Club against Moors Sports Club in a match of the Premier League Tournament Tier-B.

Later in his domestic career, he returned to his hometown to represent Colombo Cricket Club. In his domestic career, he has played 58 First-Class games, 83 List-A games, and 4 matches in the Lanka Premier League 2024.

In these appearances, the right-handed batter has scored 3755 runs in 90 FC innings at an average of 50.06, hitting 13 centuries and 13 half-centuries. Besides that, he has aggregated 2704 runs in 79 List-A innings at a decent batting average of 45.06, scoring seven centuries and 10 half-centuries.

Debut for Sri Lanka: The ‘dream come true’ moment for young lad

After showcasing his skills and grinding in the domestic cricket for six years, Pavan Rathnayake earned the international call-up in November, 2025. The 23-year-old made his international debut in the Rawalpindi ODI against Pakistan on November 16. In his debut appearance, Rathnayake scored 32 runs off 37 balls, with two fours and a six.

Later in January 2026, Sri Lanka hosted England for a three-match ODI series, in which Rathnayake represented his side in all the games. He ended up smashing his ODI career’s maiden century (121 runs off 115 balls) against England in the third and last ODI of the three-match series in his hometown, Colombo.

Although the Islanders lost the last ODI and the series, Rathnayake emerged as one of their good finds after this series.

A dream run in the T20 World Cup 2026

With an approach of investing in a promising talent, the Sri Lankan selectors picked Pavan Rathnayake in the T20 World Cup 2026 squad. The young batter didn’t disappoint the management and the Sri Lankan cricket fans and left an impressive mark with his performances.

Rathnayake ended up as the second leading run-scorer for Sri Lanka in their T20 World Cup 2026 campaign. He scored 205 runs in seven innings at a decent batting average of 34.16 and a strike rate of 154.13, hitting two boundaries.

In Sri Lanka’s last Super-8 game against Pakistan, the hosts were given a target of 213 runs. Meanwhile, the Men in Green had to restrict the Islanders to a score of 147 runs or less to qualify for the semi-finals.

But it was Pavan Rathnayake's 58-run knock and his 61-run partnership for the sixth wicket with skipper Dasun Shanaka that threw Pakistan away from the T20 World Cup 2026's semi-final race.
