Experienced fast bowler Prasidh Krishna made a memorable comeback as he ran through the opponents' batting unit with a sensational five-wicket haul in the third match of the IND Vs AFG ODI series 2026.
The dead-rubber in Chennai witnessed Krishna's bowling masterclass, with the fast bowler creating a never-seen-before record for the Indian team.
What special milestone did Prasidh Krishna achieve in IND Vs AFG 3rd ODI?
Having won the series, India made three changes to their playing XI for the final dead-rubber against Afghanistan in Chennai. Arshdeep Singh was rested, with Prasidh Krishna making his comeback after missing the second ODI in Lucknow.
The Karnataka pacer made the most of the opportunity, dismantling Afghanistan with a clinical spell. Prasidh Krishna blew away Afghanistan's top order with four scalps, and took the final wicket of Hashmatullah Shahidi to finish his spell with excellent figures of 5 for 23.
Thus, Prasidh not only registered his career-best figure but also attained a special feat, becoming the first Indian bowler to bag a five-wicket haul against Afghanistan in ODIs.
Best bowling figures for IND vs AFG in ODIs

- Ravindra Jadeja- 4/30

Before Prasidh, Ravindra Jadeja held the record for the best bowling figures for India in IND Vs AFG ODIs, having bagged four wickets for 30 runs against the same opposition in the 2014 Asia Cup.
Talking about Bumrah and Shami, both these bowlers have four-wicket hauls in IND Vs AFG ODIs. Thus, Prasidh, having recorded a fifer, unlocked a historic milestone and surpassed them in the final match at the MA Chidambaram Stadium.
Who are the other bowlers to take fifers against Afghanistan in ODIs?
While none of the Indian bowlers apart from Prasidh Krishna has a fifer against Afghanistan in ODIs, several players from other teams have done it in the past.
Scotland's Josh Davey has two ODI fifers against the Afghans, also holding the record for the best bowling figures (6/28).
Paul Stirling, Luke Jongwe, Haris Rauf, Graeme Cremer, Alex Cusack, Andy McBrine, Shakib Al Hasan, James Neesham, Shahid Afridi, Barry McCarthy, Thisara Perera and Donald Tiripano are the other bowlers who have a five-wicket haul against Afghanistan in ODIs.
How important is Prasidh Krishna's fifer from 2027 World Cup's perspective?
It's worth noting that Prasidh had a torrid start to the IND Vs AFG ODIs 2026. The right-arm pacer went wicketless for 35 runs in three overs and was comprehensively outperformed by debutant Gurnoor Brar in Dharamsala.
Prasidh was subsequently sidelined from the second ODI before India decided to rest Arshdeep and give him another chance in the Chennai encounter.
Had he blown hot and cold in this match, Prasidh could've genuinely lost his place in the ODI team, with the likes of Gurnoor Brar and Prince Yadav showcasing their mettle at the highest level.
Thus, his fifer against Afghanistan helped Prasidh Krishna rediscover his mojo and stay in contention for a spot in India's 2027 World Cup squad.
