India A captain Tilak Varma has elaborated on the conversation he had with the on-field umpires and officials after his team’s game against Sri Lanka A had ended in a tie, and there was seemingly no provision for a super over.
This incident had happened at the end of a thrilling contest between India A and Sri Lanka A at the Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium in Dambulla on June 15, 2026, in the ongoing tri-series. The game ended in a cliffhanger with light fading faster as players and officials argued.

India was reduced to 143/7 after Sri Lanka A skipper Sahan Arachchige decided to bowl first. Vaibhav Sooryavanshi (21), Tilak Varma (23), and Ruturaj Gaikwad (37) all made small contributions.
Before being bowled out, India reached 265 thanks to a 104-run partnership between Vipraj Nigam (51 off 49) and Suryansh Shedge (72 off 66), although Mohamed Shiraz and Vijaykanth Viyaskanth each claimed three wickets.
The Sri Lanka A chase was led by Sadeera Samarawickrama (93), with supporting performances from Niroshan Dickwella (37) and Wanuja Sahan (25). However, Indian bowlers continued to put pressure on Sri Lankan batsmen, and in an exciting finish, the match finished in a tie because the tailenders were unable to score two runs off the final ball.

Tilak Varma argued with the umpires for a super over
After the game ended in a tie, there was no super over provision, but with points on the line for India A and final qualification, India’s youngster Vaibhav Sooryavanshi pushed captain Tilak Varma to talk to umpires for a super over.
Arshad Khan gave up 15 runs as India A forced the game into a super over after much wrangling with the officials. Suryansh Shedge responded with three runs in three balls, and even though Vaibhav Sooryavanshi hit a four, Kugathas Mathulan bowled brilliant yorkers to give Sri Lanka A two points, and India fell well short of the 16-run target.

Tilak Varma reveals his talk with the umpire after Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s push
In an interview with Sportstar ahead of the A team tri-series final between Sri Lanka A and India A, Tilak Varma, the captain of the India A team, shared his experience of captaining a young side and what had gone down with him and the umpires in that thrilling game.
“Honestly, if you look at that game, the light wasn’t ideal for a Super Over. But we had worked hard throughout the day and wanted a result because both teams were playing for two points. That’s all I was asking the umpires about. There wasn’t much argument from our side.
As for pressure, yes, it comes with leading India because of the legacy attached to the team. But pressure is part of the job. We’ve actually played good cricket in this tournament. Against Afghanistan-A, the DLS result didn’t go our way. Against Sri Lanka-A, it was a very close game. But overall, we’ve played well as a team, and now we have one game left. We’ll give it our best,” Tilak told Sportstar.
Notably, Tilak Varma has been appointed as the new India T20I vice-captain under Shreyas Iyer, and his first assignment will be the tour of Ireland and England, where India plays a total of 7 T20Is.
