For years, Bangladesh cricket has craved for an express pacer, with the ability to torment the opposition batters with sheer pace and bounce. Some of their best bowlers in history, Mashrafe Mortaza, Rubel Hossain, and Taskin Ahmed, have the skills to trouble the batters, but not the express pace that Rana possesses.

When the right-arm pacer burst onto the scene, he had the raw talent but lacked control over his lines and lengths. Over the last few months, Rana has honed his bowling skills, and in the last two ODI series, he has wreaked havoc.

The fast bowler troubled Pakistan in the last ODI series at home, and he continued the dream form against New Zealand in the ongoing series. His best performance against the Kiwis came in the second ODI, played at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium, Mirpur.

In the second ODI of the series, the pitch favoured the pacers, as there was lateral movement on offer. Nahid Rana took advantage of the situation, as he ran riot and picked up the third-best ODI figures by a Bangladesh bowler against the New Zealand side.

The Kiwis were bundled out for a mere 198, courtesy of a fiery spell from Rana, who plucked 5 for 32 in his allotted 10 overs, and became the Bangladesh bowler with the third best ODI spell against them.

His victims were Henry Nicholls, Will Young, Muhammad Abbas, Dean Foxcroft, and Jayden Lennox.

Nahid Rana's sudden rise in world cricket

Nahid Rana always had the talent to deliver at the international level, but it wasn’t until the start of 2026 that he started to showcase his skill sets.

In 2026, the Bangladesh bowler has been on a superb run of form, picking up 14 wickets in just 5 matches, with an economy of less than 6 runs per over.

In five games, he already has two 5-wicket hauls, with the first one coming against Pakistan, wherein the fast bowler grabbed 5 for 24 and helped the Tigers seal the win. His second fifer was against the Kiwis in the second ODI, as he tormented them with sheer pace and bounce.

Bangladesh dominate after Nahid Rana rips through Kiwi batters

After Nahid Rana ran through the Kiwi batters, the Tigers were set a target of 199 inside 50 overs. The target was small, but New Zealand bowlers decided to test the Bangladesh batters as the hosts lost two quick wickets inside 21 runs.

The ball was doing enough for the batters to play carefully, but after the two early wickets, the Bangladesh players decided to attack the Black Caps bowlers as Tanzid Hasan, and Najmul Hossain Shanto, played an aggressive brand of cricket to stun the visitors.

At the moment, Bangladesh needs 139 more runs, with the required rate at 3.30 runs per over.
