Mumbai Indians will take on the Gujarat Titans at the Narendra Modi Stadium in the 30th match of the ongoing IPL 2026. However, the focus is firmly on Rohit Sharma's fitness and his availability for the MI vs GT clash.
The five-time champions have had a disappointing campaign so far. Mumbai Indians are currently placed at the bottom of the points table, with just one win in five matches so far.
After a strong start in IPL 2026, where MI defeated Kolkata Knight Riders by 6 wickets, the Hardik Pandya-led team have lost four consecutive matches against Punjab Kings, RCB, Rajasthan Royals, and Delhi Capitals.
With MI's form and performance already under question, Rohit Sharma's return for the much-awaited fixture against Gujarat will be an important aspect.
When did Rohit Sharma get injured?
It is important to mention that Rohit Sharma suffered a hamstring injury during the match against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). He was batting on 19 runs when he experienced discomfort and had to retire hurt. The injury forced him to miss the next match against Punjab Kings on April 16.
Reports suggest that hamstring injuries usually require at least a week or more for proper recovery, making Rohit Sharma's quick return difficult.
Will Rohit Sharma play in GT vs MI IPL 2026 clash?
Although Rohit Sharma has been seen practising in the nets ahead of the Gujarat Titans clash, his chances of playing remain slim (The Indian Express). Given the nature of his injury, the Mumbai Indians may prefer not to rush him back, keeping his long-term availability in mind.
"The Indian Express understands that the 38-year-old will be travelling to Narendra Modi Stadium much earlier with the team to assess his fitness. Any hamstring scare takes a player a minimum of eight days to recover fully and the chances of him playing today remain bleak," the report stated.

In the practice session before the MI vs GT match, Rohit Sharma had spent plenty of time and looked comfortable at the pre-match session. The Mumbai Indians' bowling coach, Paras Mhambrey, also provided a crucial update on the MI's star player.
"In fact, if you are just walking by the nets out here, if you just look at Rohitâs batting. So yeah, he is working on it. Santner is fit. So, unfortunately, we missed him (Santner) in the last game, picked up a bug. Not something that we could do. But both are fit, yeah," the MI coach said.
While the team management has hinted that he is recovering, his participation in the MI vs GT clash remains doubtful. However, the Mumbai Indians will next face CSK on April 23, and there is a chance Rohit will return for this match.
