Chennai Super Kings’ leading wicket-taker of IPL 2026 was taken to the cleaners by the Lucknow Super Giants on Friday night at the Ekana Stadium, as the Super Kings played for their survival in the tournament.
In the absence of Jamie Overton, the onus of the pace attack was on Anshul Kamboj again, after showing up consistently this season, while also holding the Purple Cap briefly. However, on what was an off-day for the bowler, he conceded a whopping 0/63 in just 2.4 overs of his spell as the LSG chased down 188/3 in 16.4 overs.
During this spell, the bowler unfortunately also broke a dreaded record of conceding the most sixes in an innings, joining a fellow Indian bowler.
Anshul Kamboj concedes a record number of sixes in an IPL innings
The Super Kings were put in to bat first on the night, where the LSG bowling unit restricted the visitors to 187/5 in 20 overs. In response, having scored a century in his last outing at the venue, Mitchell Marsh was in his element again, as he racked up 90 off 38 with 7 sixes.
In the process, he ripped into Kamboj, who bowled short deliveries to him, which were never a problem for the batter who grew up at the WACA. In the fifth over of the innings, Marsh hit four consecutive sixes to Kamboj to go from 14*(13) to 42*(19).
Later in the innings, when 24 were required in the final four overs, Kamboj, who has been CSK’s go-to bowler at the death, again went for four sixes in a row — this time courtesy of Nicholas Pooran, who finished the match in style.
Previously, only Yash Dayal, in the infamous game against KKR in 2023, conceded 8 sixes in an innings.

Kamboj’s impressive season takes a jolt
To Anshul Kamboj’s credit, in a topsy-turvy season for CSK, he has been one of their consistent performers throughout the competition. In 12 innings, he is sitting on 19 wickets this season, with the best figures of 3/22. Right now, he is the third-highest wicket-taker of the season behind Bhuvneshwar Kumar (22) and Kagiso Rabada (21).
He has predominantly bowled with the older ball, picking 11 scalps between overs 15 to 20. No other ball in this season has picked more wickets than him in the death overs. The match against LSG is only the second time in the season that he has gone for more than 50 runs in an innings.
Can CSK qualify for the playoffs after a loss vs LSG?
Having played 12 matches of IPL 2026 so far, CSK have bounced back well from the three consecutive losses at the start of the season. Right now, they are 6th on the table with 12 points in 12 matches.
Up next, they will face the Sunrisers Hyderabad and the Gujarat Giants, and both games will be must-win for them to qualify for the playoffs.
