PBKS qualification scenarios after loss vs MI [Source: AP]
The Punjab Kings' losing streak in IPL 2026 extended to five losses on Thursday night in Dharamsala as the five-time champions, Mumbai Indians, won by 4 wickets. With this, they picked up their 7th win of the season to take the points tally to 15 points — well within the touching distance of Qualifier 1.
After being put in to bat by the visitors, amid a lot of chaos around his name, Prabhsimran Singh scored a crucial 57(32) with six fours and four sixes before the middle-order crumbled.
At one stage, they went from 107/1 to 135/6, but thanks to Azmatullah Omarzai's 38(17) with two fours and four sixes, followed by cameos from Vishnu Vinod (15* off 8) and Xavier Bartlett (18* off 7), PBKS managed to score 200/8 in 20 overs.
In response, Ryan Rickelton started the chase well with a brisk 48(23), followed by a match-winning 75*(33) from Tilak Varma and 25*(10) from Will Jacks. Azmatullah Omarzai also picked 2/36 to end his first match of the season on a high note.
As the PBKS lose their fifth on the trot, we take a look at their playoff qualification scenarios.
How can Punjab Kings qualify for the IPL 2026 playoffs?
The Punjab Kings were in a strong position to secure a top-4 finish in IPL 2026 after starting the season with 7 losses on the bounce. However, the 5 losses have completely derailed their campaign, and now all their matches have become virtual knockouts.
To qualify for the playoffs, they need two wins in two matches. They could finish in the top-4, but their Qualifier 1 spot now looks out of their hands. Even two wins in two games wouldn't guarantee a top-2 finish, considering two teams are already on 16 points. Their match against RCB will be important for them to stand an outside chance for a top-2 finish.
