Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) captain Rajat Patidar recently shared his opinion on who he thinks is the best captain in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Interestingly, he did not choose Virat Kohli, which came as a surprise to many fans.
To begin with, although Virat Kohli is one of the greatest batters in cricket, his success as an IPL captain has been limited.
Virat Kohli’s captaincy record in IPL
Notably, Virat Kohli led RCB in 143 matches, out of which the team won 66 games. This gives him a win percentage of 46.15%. Moreover, he holds the record of captaining RCB in more than 100 matches, making him the longest-serving captain for the franchise.
However, despite his strong performances with the bat, Kohli was unable to guide RCB to an IPL trophy during his captaincy. Therefore, his leadership record in the league is often seen as less impressive compared to his international achievements.
Rajat Patidar picks Rohit Sharma as best captain
Meanwhile, in a video shared by Cricbuzz, Rajat Patidar was asked to name the best captain in IPL history. In response, he chose Rohit Sharma.
This choice makes sense because Rohit Sharma has been one of the most successful captains in the IPL. Not only has he led the Mumbai Indians to great heights, but he has also built a legacy of consistent success.

Rohit Sharma’s outstanding IPL achievements
Furthermore, Rohit Sharma captained Mumbai Indians to five IPL titles in just eight seasons. His championship wins came in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019, and 2020. As a result, he has one of the best records as a captain in the league.
In addition, Mumbai Indians showed incredible dominance under his leadership. For example, they won three titles in just four years between 2017 and 2020. Because of this remarkable consistency, Rohit Sharma is often regarded as one of the greatest IPL captains of all time.
However, when it came to choosing the best batter in the IPL, Rajat Patidar selected Virat Kohli. This shows that even though he did not pick Kohli as captain, he still respects his batting abilities.
Similarly, Patidar named Faf du Plessis as the best fielder in the league. Moreover, he once again mentioned Kohli when asked about the player with the best cover drive.
RCB’s strong start in IPL 2026
Under Rajat Patidar’s leadership, RCB started their IPL 2026 campaign on a positive note. They defeated Sunrisers Hyderabad in their opening match at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium on March 28.
During the match, Virat Kohli played a brilliant unbeaten innings of 69 runs off 38 balls. At the same time, Devdutt Padikkal scored a quick 61, helping RCB chase down the target comfortably.
Earlier, Sunrisers Hyderabad had posted a strong total of 201 runs, with Ishan Kishan scoring 80 runs. Despite this, RCB chased the target in just 15.4 overs. Additionally, debutant Jacob Duffy impressed with the ball, taking three wickets.
As a result of this win, RCB made a strong start to their title defence. They are now aiming to become only the third team in IPL history to successfully defend their title, after Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians.
Next, RCB will face CSK in their second match on April 5 at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium.
