Young South African batter Dewald Brevis missed the opening match of Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the Indian Premier League (IPL 2026), which was played on April 30. However, encouraging updates have now emerged for fans ahead of the team’s upcoming fixture.

To begin with, CSK endured a disappointing start to their campaign. The team suffered an eight-wicket defeat against Rajasthan Royals after managing a modest total of 127 runs. The pitch conditions, influenced by rain and extended cover time, played a role in shaping the contest.

Furthermore, Rajasthan’s captain Riyan Parag chose to bowl first, and his decision proved effective. The bowling unit maintained consistent pressure, and as a result, CSK struggled to form meaningful partnerships.

Although the batting lineup faltered, Jamie Overton stood out with a composed innings of 43 runs, offering some resistance in an otherwise challenging outing.

It is important to note that Dewald Brevis was ruled out of the match due to a side strain. Head coach Stephen Fleming confirmed before the match that the youngster was undergoing rehabilitation. He also indicated that the recovery period might not be too long, which raised hopes within the camp.

Dewald Brevis returns to CSK practice session

Meanwhile, a major boost arrived when Dewald Brevis was seen participating in a recent practice session ahead of CSK’s clash with Punjab Kings. According to reports, the young batter appeared confident during training, and his presence immediately lifted the mood among supporters.

In addition, his return to the nets signals encouraging progress in his recovery. Even though there has been no official confirmation regarding his selection for the next match, his involvement in practice suggests that he could be close to making a comeback.

Looking back, Dewald Brevis had joined the franchise as a mid-season replacement for Gurjapneet Singh. Despite the team facing difficulties last season, he emerged as a bright spot.

Over six matches, he accumulated 225 runs at an impressive average of 37.50, along with a striking rate of 180. Therefore, his potential return could strengthen the middle order significantly.

Alongside Brevis, there was more encouraging news for CSK supporters. Former India captain MS Dhoni was also seen training in the nets. He looked in good rhythm and appeared comfortable while playing his shots.

Earlier, MS Dhoni had been ruled out of the initial phase of the tournament due to a calf injury. The franchise had confirmed on March 28 that he would miss at least the first two weeks while undergoing rehabilitation. Nevertheless, his recent practice session indicates steady progress in his recovery.

CSK standings in IPL 2026 Points Table
