Bangladesh achieved the unthinkable as they beat Australia in the first ODI of the 3-game series at Dhaka. The victory was special as the hosts registered multiple records and set new milestones in their ODI cricket history.

The game began with Bangladesh posting a total of 284 runs in the first innings. In the chase, however, Australia collapsed unexpectedly. The rain played spoilsport in the end, and the home team later emerged victorious.

Bangladesh thrash Australia to script history

That being said, with an 86-run victory, Bangladesh registered their first-ever ODI win over Australia on their home turf. Apart from this, the hosts also broke the following records:

  • Only 2nd ODI win vs Australia, ending a 21-year wait.
  • 4/41 - Nahid Rana’s best bowling figures for Bangladesh vs Australia ODIs, third best spell of Rana in ODIs.
  • 3 - Australia registered the second most consecutive ODI innings with 0-run opening partnerships
  • Taskin Ahmed became the fourth Bangladesh bowler to pick a wicket on the first ball of an innings in ODIs.
  • 86* - Mosaddek Hossain registered the fifth highest individual score for Bangladesh vs Australia in ODIs.
  • 45 - Mosaddek Hossain and Taskin Ahmed register the second-highest partnership for the 8th or lower wicket for Bangladesh vs Australia in ODIs.
  • 284/8 - Fourth highest total for Bangladesh vs Australia in ODIs.

Mosaddek Hossain made a heroic return for Bangladesh

The star of the show for Bangladesh was definitely Mosaddek Hossain. Making an ODI comeback after 4 years, he made the opportunity count. Hossain scored a crucial 86* with the bat to push the host team to a match-winning total of 284 runs.

Despite repeated rain interruptions, Bangladesh didn’t let the momentum slip in the second innings. Taskin Ahmed struck early before Nahid Rana took over to destroy Australia’s middle order with a four-wicket-haul.

Mosaddek Hossain also grabbed 2 wickets with the ball in what turned out to be a heroic comeback game for him.

Eventually, rain had its final say, and the play had to be called off. Bangladesh were ahead when the play stopped, and hence they were declared winners by 86 runs as per the DLS method.

Australia fell massively short

Having said that, Australia seemed shaken throughout the first ODI. Nathan Ellis picked up 3 wickets with the ball, but Xavier Bartlett and Adam Zampa conceded a lot of runs.

In the chase, Matthew Short fell on a golden duck, thus triggering a collapse. From 91/4, Alex Carey and Cameron Green tried to rebuild the innings by scoring 47 and 52, respectively.

However, Green was left stranded on one end as he saw his teammate throw away their wickets in an awful fashion. Eventually, Australia finished with 191/9 before the DLS method declared Bangladesh the winner, and the hosts now take a 1-0 lead in the series.
