Ben Stokes might step down as England captain following his alleged involvement in the ‘nightclub controversy’ alongside teammate Gus Atkinson. Moreover, the legendary English all-rounder might also take a surprise retirement from international cricket, according to recent reports.
Both Stokes and Atkinson apparently breached the team’s protocol by attending a nightclub in the early hours of Monday, i.e., shortly after England’s emphatic victory over the visiting New Zealand team at Lord’s in London.
Ben Stokes likely to take retirement after nightclub incident
As reported by TalkSport, senior correspondent at The Cricketer, George Dobell has stated that Ben Stokes might take retirement from the game following his involvement in the nightclub incident with a Saracens rugby player.

Dobell, in his report, said “I fear from everything I hear that Stokes is going to act first. And, regretfully, I hear that he is going to step down and possibly even retire. I think that would be hugely regrettable and I hope he doesn't. I hope he stands and fights his ground, which is the Stokes we know.”
Stokes and Atkinson Nightclub incident: What exactly happened?
Both Ben Stokes and Gus Atkinson broke the ECB’s protocols by remaining out beyond the team’s recently-introduced midnight curfew. As reported by several English media outlets, the two cricketers were involved in an altercation with a Saracens academy rugby player.
While details of the incident are yet to be officially revealed by the ECB, a report indicates that the rugby player allegedly attempted to punch Atkinson. However, the punch missed the target and struck an ECB security guard instead. The guard suffered injuries that required stitches.
More importantly, the ECB sources have maintained that the England cricketers were “not the aggressors” in the incident. Be that as it may, Stokes and Atkinson are still expected to face the heat for breaking the team’s curfew and ECB’s protocols.
England and repeated brush with ‘midnight’ controversies
The Ben Stokes and Gus Atkinson nightclub controversy is just the latest in a series of off-field incidents involving England cricketers. Late last year, England’s white-ball captain Harry Brook was involved in an altercation with a bouncer at a Wellington nightclub during his team’s tour of New Zealand.
In between Tests from the 2025-26 Ashes series in Australia, firebrand opening batter Ben Duckett was filmed in a drunken state in Noosa. Significantly, all these incidents have occurred during Ben Stokes' tenure as England captain, raising fresh questions about discipline and accountability within the setup.
The latest nightclub controversy involving Stokes himself is likely to invite even greater scrutiny, given that the team's leader now finds himself at the centre of an off-field storm.
A look at Stokes career
If Ben Stokes indeed takes a retirement from the game, the legendary English all-rounder will conclude his career at 121 Tests. Having made his international debut in 2011, the cricketer aggregated 7,228 runs in the five-day format at an average of 34.58. He also picked up 246 Test wickets in the process.
He has taken an additional 100 wickets in both white-ball formats combined, with a batting aggregate of nearly 4,000 runs.
Stokes was the architect of England’s historic 2019 World Cup and 2022 T20 World Cup wins.
