Australia lost opening batter Matthew Short for a first-ball duck against Bangladesh in the first ODI of their three-match series on Tuesday, June 9.

Opening the innings in a chase of 285, Short got knocked over by Taskin Ahmed without opening his account at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur.

The dismissal marked yet another scoreless opening partnership for the Australian cricket team, after stumbling to successive ducks in Pakistan earlier this month. In the process, Australia has now joined New Zealand and Papua New Guinea for a huge unwanted ODI record.

Australia register unwanted opening partnership record

The Australian cricket team just employed a new opening pair, their third different opening pair in three ODI matches.

In the first ODI match of the series against Bangladesh on June 9, the Australian team management sent out Matthew Short and Cooper Connolly to open the innings for the visitors in Mirpur in a chase of 285.

The outcome turned out to be yet another opening dud for Australia, with Matthew Short falling for a first-ball duck to Taskin Ahmed.

Earlier this month, the opening pair of Alex Carey and Matthew Short also failed to open their account, with the former getting knocked over to Shaheen Afridi for a first-ball duck against Pakistan in Lahore on June 2.

A couple of days later at the same venue, it was Matthew Short who was dismissed for a two-ball duck during his opening partnership with captain Josh Inglis, also against hosts Pakistan.

With three instances of Australia’s opening partnership failing to put up a run, Australia has now levelled with New Zealand in terms of recording the joint-second highest number of scoreless opening partnerships in a row in ODI cricket.

Papua New Guinea continues to hold the all-time shambolic record for going four ODI innings with their opening pair failing to notch up a single run in 2022. Here is a look at teams with most consecutive ODI innings with zero runs for the opening wicket.

Bangladesh set to go 1-0 up vs Australia

Bangladesh batted first and charted 284-8 in 20 overs. Tanzid Hasan, Najmul Hossain Shanto and Mosaddek Hossain all notched up cracking half-centuries for the hosts, with Mosaddek making 86* off just 70 balls.

In response, Bangladesh bowlers Taskin Ahmed (1-28), Mustafizur Rahman (2-22) and Nahid Rana (4-41) made the most of Australia’s opening salvo to reduce the visitors to 191-9 before a lengthy rain interruption.

Australia’s opening woes led to series defeat in Pakistan

The Australian cricket team also recently suffered a 1-2 ODI series defeat in Pakistan earlier this month. Twice in the series did their opening partnership failed to put together a run at the top.

In the third ODI, the visitors folded up for just 157 in 42 overs, before a cautious knock from Babar Azam and finishing touches from Shadab Khan guided the ‘Men in Green’ to a four-wicket win in just 41.5 overs.
