Shreyas Iyer for SoBo [Source: @Shreyasian96/X]
Just three days after being appointed as India’s new T20I captain, Shreyas Iyer went through an unexpected dip in form in the Mumbai T20 League.
The right-handed batter, who was handed the leadership role by the BCCI for the Ireland and England tours, failed to make an impact with the bat in the most-recent match of the competition.
Shreyas Iyer registers low score in 1st innings after being named India captain
The timing of Iyer's slump became a talking point as it came immediately after one of the biggest moments of his career.
On June 6, chief selector Ajit Agarkar confirmed that Iyer would replace Suryakumar Yadav as India's T20I captain. The decision came after extensive discussions within the selection committee following India's T20 World Cup 2026 campaign.
Iyer's Struggles in Mumbai T20 league in a nutshell
However, Shreyas Iyer's performances in the Mumbai T20 League have not matched the confidence shown in him by the selectors.
Representing SoBo Mumbai Falcons, Shreyas Iyer has managed only 45 runs from three innings at an average of 15.00 and a strike rate of 109.76.
His latest outing came against Aakash Tigers MWS at the Wankhede Stadium on June 9, where he scored just 10 runs off 10 balls as his side suffered a heavy 66-run defeat.
Across three innings, Iyer has looked far from his fluent best despite entering the competition after another strong IPL season.
SoBo Mumbai Falcons Collapse Against Aakash Tigers
The latest setback of Shreyas Iyer-led SoBo Mumbai Falcons came at the Wankhede Stadium as Aakash Tigers posted a massive 227/6 in their 20 overs.
Jay Bista smashed 57 from 27 balls, while Ajit Yadav blasted 68 from 35 deliveries. Sarfaraz Khan also provided early momentum with a blistering 31 off just ten deliveries. Chasing 228, SoBo Mumbai Falcons lost wickets regularly and crumbled like a pack of cards.

Ishan Mulchandani gave them a rapid start with a quick-fire 40-run knock, but the innings quickly lost momentum following his departure.
Shreyas Iyer arrived at a crucial stage but failed to accelerate for his side, managing only 10 runs from as many deliveries before being dismissed by Shashank Attarde. The Falcons were eventually bowled out for 161 in 17.5 overs, losing the match by 66 runs.
Why The Expectations Around Shreyas Iyer Are So High
The scrutiny surrounding Iyer's form is understandable considering the performances that earned him the India captaincy.
He led Kolkata Knight Riders to the IPL title in 2024 before guiding Punjab Kings to the IPL final in 2025. His batting numbers have also been impressive as a captain in the Indian T20 league.
In IPL 2025, he scored 604 runs at a strike rate of 175.07. He followed that up with 498 runs in IPL 2026 for the Kings at a strike rate of 168.81.
Thus, Iyer's back-to-back blockbuster IPL seasons convinced the selectors that he was ready to lead India's next T20 generation.
In fact, Agarkar himself said that Shreyas Iyer's captaincy record and batting form made him the ideal candidate for the role.
Is The Captaincy Pressure Affecting Him?
It may be too early to draw firm conclusions, but the sudden dip in Shreyas Iyer's form naturally raises questions.
Captaincy often brings additional responsibilities apart from batting. Every decision, team selection, field placement, and tactical move comes under scrutiny. Even experienced players sometimes need time to adjust after receiving leadership duties.
In Shreyas Iyer's case, the expectations are even higher because he is not only replacing a World Cup-winning captain but is also expected to become India's long-term leader in the shortest format.
However, what will encourage India fans is that Iyer has repeatedly bounced back from setbacks throughout his career. His recent IPL 2026 performances showed that he remains one of India's most consistent white-ball batters and might continue to be so in the future.
