Shubman Gill enters the IPL 2026 season with expectations mounting around his leadership and consistency. While the cricketer served as India’s vice-captain up until a few months ago, the 26-year-old was dropped from the national side just before the recently-concluded 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.
On top of it all, replacement opener Sanju Samson went on to bag the ‘Player of the Tournament’ award as India clinched the T20 World Cup title with a huge win over New Zealand in Ahmedabad.
Despite the recent setbacks and shifting dynamics within the national setup, Shubman Gill seemingly remains unfazed as he recently exuded a quiet assurance while heading into a brand-new IPL season. When asked whether the upcoming IPL 2026 season presents an opportunity to prove himself, Gill dismissed the notion and cited his past track record with the Gujarat Titans instead.

The Gujarat Titans skipper calmly responded that his sole focus is to lead his side to title glory instead of “proving” his cricketing skills to anyone. Gill added that he has already aggregated the most IPL runs in the last three to four IPL seasons, reinforcing his belief that his record already speaks for itself.
He said “I don't need to prove my cricketing skills to anyone. I have scored the most runs in the IPL over the last 3-4 seasons. Our focus is to lift the trophy for Gujarat Titans in IPL 2026.”
While the response reflected a team-first, composed outlook, many fans perceived his reference to past records as a hint of arrogance rather than quiet confidence. Several Indian cricket fans took to social media to question Shubman Gill’s claims, with some reminding him of Sanju Samson’s T20 World Cup winning performance.
Others even compared Gill with Pakistan opener Sahibzada Farhan, who recently scored the most runs at the 2026 T20 World Cup but failed to guide his side beyond the Super 8s. Here is a look at some of the fans reacting to Gill’s recent remarks about his past IPL record.
Shubman Gill’s recent IPL record
Compatible to Shubman Gill’s claims, the active Gujarat Titans skipper has indeed aggregated the highest number of IPL runs in the past five editions of the tournament combined. The prolific right-handed batter has charted 2,927 runs in 77 innings, surpassing even RCB legend Virat Kohli by nearly 150 runs.
Gill even bagged the coveted ‘Orange Cap’ for the Titans in the IPL 2023 season for minting 890 runs at an astonishing average of nearly 60 and a strike rate of 157.80.
