Fans react to Suryakumar Yadav's 48(24) [Source: JioHotstar, X]
For the first time since the T20 World Cup win earlier this year, India’s squad for the format was announced on Saturday afternoon as they are set to tour Ireland and England at the end of June. They will subsequently play the Asian Games, where the majority of the squad will remain the same.
Notably, Suryakumar Yadav was missing from the teams, and Shreyas Iyer was appointed as India’s newest T20I skipper after a dip in Yadav’s form over the past 12-18 months.
However, just hours after the squads were announced, both Yadav and Iyer faced off in the Mumbai T20 League, and the former skipper once again looked in his old touch, proving that class remains permanent. With this, he raised a question among the fans: whether his snub came too quickly and if he should have been given a longer rope.
Suryakumar Yadav shuts critics hours after removal from T20I captaincy
In the ongoing Mumbai T20 League, the two-time T20 World Cup winner is captaining Triumphs Knights MNE. His team coincidentally took on Shreyas Iyer’s SoBo Mumbai Falcons on the same day when the latter was announced as the new captain.
While batting first at Wankhede, Suryakumar Yadav walked in to bat inside the powerplay when his team was 19/2 in 4.4 overs. But, as always, he did not succumb to the pressure and played a counter-attacking knock. The wickets kept falling from one end, but he got to 48 off just 24 balls before being cleaned up by Yash Dicholkar.
During his stay, he scored four sixes and three fours and top-scored for his team. They finished at an underwhelming 147/8, but his knock gave the bowlers something to work with. During the second innings, at the end of 3 overs, SoBo Mumbai Falcons are 26/1. Notably, Shreyas Iyer is not playing the match, and Aditya Tare is leading the Falcons.
Fans react to SKY’s vintage knock
Although the veteran batter did not reach any landmark during the innings, fans on social media were delighted to see him back in good touch. At the back of an underwhelming T20 World Cup for his standards, he had only scored 270 runs in 13 IPL matches at a strike rate of 147.54.
At 35, it is not too easy for him to find his way back into the Indian team, but the knock at Wankhede instilled some confidence in his fans that he could still contribute at least in the IPL.

Was Suryakumar Yadav unfairly removed as India’s captain?
The former Indian skipper was under a fair bit of scrutiny for more than a year. He had finished 2025 without a T20I fifty and as a pioneer of modern T20 batting, fans and experts expected a lot more from him.
While he scored a crucial 84*(49) against USA to help India win from 77/6 at one point, his dip was very evident, and players like Shreyas Iyer and Rajat Patidar were still knocking on the door. After winning the T20 World Cup, it looks like an unfair call, but considering he will be 38 in the next T20 World Cup, it is a fairly logical step for the BCCI to look at the future.
