Rajasthan Royals (RR) will take on the high-flying Punjab Kings (PBKS) in match no. 40 of the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026. The match scheduled for tonight, April 28, will be played at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium, Mullanpur.
The Shreyas Iyer-led PBKS are in impressive form, sitting comfortably on top of the points table with six wins from seven matches. Their chasing ability has been particularly impressive, as evident in their latest clash against Delhi Capitals, where they chased a historic 265.
RR are currently placed fourth, with five wins from eight matches. Notably, they are coming off a loss against Sunrisers Hyderabad. Moreover, an injury to their best batter so far in the season, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, has left his availability for the upcoming clash in doubt.
What happened to Vaibhav Sooryavanshi?
Rajasthan Royals’ prodigious batter, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, suffered an injury scare after walking off the field in pain shortly after scoring a record-breaking century against Sunrisers Hyderabad.
The 15-year-old appeared to be hurt while fielding in the early stages of SRH’s chase. He was attended by the physio and eventually had to be helped off the field. Fielding at covers, Sooryavanshi sprinted after a lofted stroke from Ishan Kishan but suddenly pulled up, clutching his right thigh.
He struggled to move freely and eventually had to be assisted off by the team physio, sparking fears of a hamstring injury.
While the initial visuals suggested a hamstring pull, it later appeared more likely that the teenager was battling severe cramps. Having spent significant time at the crease during Rajasthan’s innings, the physical toll of being in extreme temperatures seemed to catch up with him.
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi injury update
After the match, the RR batting coach, Vikram Rathour, was asked for an update on Sooryavanshi, and he then revealed that there's nothing serious and that the youngster seems to be “okay.”
Rathour told reporters that the teenager felt something in his hamstring. The physios treated him, and he looked okay later.
Will Vaibhav Sooryavanshi play today’s IPL match between PBKS and RR?
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi will most likely play, but possibly as an Impact Player, for Rajasthan Royals against Punjab Kings in today’s PBKS vs RR, IPL 2026 match, despite a minor injury scare.
In the IPL 2026 season, Sooryavanshi has smashed three half-centuries off just 15 balls. On Saturday, he registered the second-fastest century by an Indian in the IPL. The record belongs to the youngster himself as he notched up a ton off 35 balls against the Gujarat Titans last year.
Sooryavanshi has a total of 357 runs to his name in the eight matches he has played in IPL 2026 so far at an average of 44.63 and a strike rate of 234.86. He is striking the ball better than the likes of Abhishek Sharma, KL Rahul, Ishan Kishan, Heinrich Klaasen, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer and Prabhsimran Singh.
