The defending champions, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), are just one step away from becoming the finalists of the Indian Premier League (IPL 2026).

The Rajat Patidar-led RCB are set to take on Gujarat Titans in Qualifier 1 tonight, May 2026, at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association (HPCA) Stadium in Dharamsala.

However, for the Bengaluru-based franchise, the biggest concern still remains the availability of their match-winner Phil Salt

Why is Phil Salt not playing in IPL 2026?

Salt had an utterly disappointing run in the 2026 T20 World Cup. The swashbuckling English batter only managed 130 runs across eight innings, averaging less than 17 in the tournament.

Nonetheless, he reaffirmed his form in the ongoing IPL 2026 for RCB, forming a destructive opening pair with Virat Kohli. Finding his mojo back, Salt amassed 202 runs at an average of 33.67 and a blistering strike rate of 168.33, before an untimely finger marred his campaign.

Phil Salt's effort to help RCB win back-to-back titles in IPL 2026 was jeopardised by an unfortunate finger injury.

For the unversed, he sustained the injury while fielding in the RCB vs DC encounter and was subsequently sidelined from the playing XI of the Bengaluru-based franchise. The Englishman flew back to his home mid-IPL and spent the recovery period with his family.

Phil Salt joins RCB camp; Will he play Qualifier 1?

In a significant development last week, Salt returned to India, joined the Royal Challengers Bengaluru camp, and is available for the business end of the tournament. He has since been travelling with the team, even accompanying them on match days.

Thus, his return provides a huge boost to the team’s batting lineup, which had briefly relied on Jacob Bethell during Salt’s month-long absence.

Coming back to the question of the hour, Phil Salt’s availability for the IPL 2026 Qualifier 1 against GT remains highly uncertain, with the batter still nursing his finger. RCB Captain Rajat Patidar was asked about Salt's availability for the game. His response also did not portray the true picture of the Englishman for RCB vs GT Qualifier 1 match.

"Salt is fit. He is under observation from the doctor. He has been participating in a few drills, but we haven’t decided on our playing eleven yet. We will look at the wicket and decide," Patidar said in the pre-match press conference on the eve of the game.

How has Salt’s absence impacted RCB’s opening woes?

In Phil Salt’s absence, Jacob Bethell received an extended run in the playing XI after Salt’s injury. However, the youngster failed to convert his opportunities into consistent performances.

That further increased the pressure on the franchise to bring back Salt as soon as possible.

His aggressive batting style allows Kohli to settle into innings while the scoreboard keeps moving quickly from the other end. RCB’s batting lineup looks more balanced whenever Salt plays freely during the power play.

Adding to the misery, Bethell has also been ruled out of the season after sustaining a finger injury, with Venkatesh Iyer stepping up as Virat Kohli’s opening partner.

Thus, the defending champions, RCB, will be pinning their hopes on Phil Salt to return for the business end of the IPL 2026, as they aim to claim a historic consecutive IPL trophy.

Virat Kohli-starred RCB will take on GT in Dharamsala after finishing at the top of the IPL 2026 points table with 9 wins from 14 matches. Salt, who was injured and missed the last few games, is expected to make his return to the line-up, replacing Jacob Bethell.

Meanwhile, RCB are also tasked with making a tough call on whether Venkatesh Iyer should feature in the playing XI instead of Devdutt Padikkal.
