Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Mumbai Indians (MI) are set to face off in Match 65 of the Indian Premier League (IPL 2026) at the iconic Eden Gardens in Kolkata tonight, May 20.
In their previous encounter in the season, Match 2, at the Wankhede Stadium, Hardik Pandya-led Mumbai Indians won by 6 wickets. KKR set a strong total of 220/4, with captain Ajinkya Rahane leading the way with 67, followed by a 51 off 29 by Angkrish Raghuvanshi.
However, MI chased down the target with 5 balls to spare thanks to explosive knocks from Ryan Rickelton’s 81 and Rahit Sharma’s 78.
It is worth noting that MI have already been eliminated from the IPL 2026 playoffs race. Meanwhile, KKR will look to continue their momentum at home to cement a place in the second half of the tournament.
That being said, all eyes will be on the availability of captain Hardik Pandya and star batter Suryakumar Yadav, who missed their previous fixture against Punjab Kings (PBKS).
Will Hardik Pandya play today’s IPL 2026 match?
Under-fire Hardik Pandya has had a miserable time in the IPL 2026, both as a player and as the MI captain. The star Indian all-rounder has been unable to perform with both bat and ball, scoring 146 runs at a strike rate of around 136 while taking only 4 wickets at an economy rate of around 12.
However, at present, the biggest concern for Mumbai Indians remains his fitness. Hardik has already missed Mumbai Indians’ 4 previous matches, and the franchise is continuing to closely monitor his recovery.

His absence has also fuelled speculation about his future with the franchise after he was seen interacting with Chennai Super Kings CEO Kasi Viswanathan, while some reports linked him with a possible move to Delhi Capitals.
As seen in the recently circulating videos, the MI captain has travelled with the team to Kolkata and has resumed practise with his IPL franchise in full intensity.
Thus, from what it seems, Hardik Pandya is highly likely to return to Mumbai Indians’ playing 11 for their next match against Kolkata Knight Riders.
What’s the latest update on Suryakumar Yadav?
Contrary to earlier updates of Suryakumar Yadav being available for MI’s previous match against Punjab Kings, the stand-in captain also missed the side’s match in Dharamsala.
It was learned that the right-hander had decided against travelling and had already communicated his decision to the team management ahead of the fixture.
However, reports have confirmed that he has since rejoined the MI squad and is included in the team previews for the upcoming clash.
While there are no official updates provided by either the player or the franchise, Suryakumar Yadav is expected to play in Mumbai Indians' next IPL 2026 match tonight, May 20.
Important match for both teams
The KKR vs MI clash comes at a critical point in IPL 2026. Kolkata Knight Riders are still pushing hard for a playoff spot, while Mumbai Indians are trying to finish the season strongly after an inconsistent campaign.
Without Hardik Pandya, MI lose balance in both departments. His ability to contribute with bat and ball has been badly missed in recent games. On the other hand, Suryakumar Yadav’s presence provides Mumbai with stability and leadership under pressure.
