In a significant development, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Tuesday, May 19, announced the squad for the upcoming India vs Afghanistan multi-format series in June.

For the unversed, Rohit Sharma (subject to fitness) and Virat Kohli have been named in India’s ODI squad for the three-match series, starting from June 14, 2026, at the Dharamshala.

Moreover, Jasprit Bumrah and Ravindra Jadeja have been rested for both the Test and ODI assignments, while wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant does not feature in the ODI setup.

India’s squads for both ODI and Test will be led by the newly appointed Shubman Gill, with the series expected to be part of the team’s preparations for the 2027 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup.

India vs Afghanistan Squad Announcement: These players will play both the formats

1. Shubman Gill

A 19-year-old boy from Punjab, Shubman Gill, made his international debut on January 31, 2019, after a prolific run in the U19 World Cup in 2018.

Bursting onto the scene as the Player of the Tournament in the 2018 U-19 World Cup, he has since become the fastest player to reach 2,000 ODI runs and one of the few Indians to score centuries in all three international formats.

Fast forward to October 2025: Shubman Gill serves as the permanent captain of the Indian Test and ODI teams and as the deputy captain in T20Is.

2. KL Rahul

A highly versatile, composed top-order batter and wicketkeeper, KL Rahul has replaced Rishabh Pant as the vice-captain of the Indian Test team ahead of the series against Afghanistan.

Making his international debut in 2014, Rahul, as one of the senior members of the squad, continues to provide valuable leadership.

3. Nitish Kumar Reddy

A standout performer for Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL, Nitish Kumar Reddy broke through as an international star by scoring a historic maiden Test century against Australia in late 2024.

He is the first cricketer from the Andhra Cricket Academy to represent India across all three formats.

Reddy scored a famous maiden century (114) during the Boxing Day Test at Melbourne, setting the record for the highest score by an Indian batting at No. 8 or lower in Australia.

4. Kuldeep Yadav

An elite left-arm wrist-spinner, Kuldeep Yadav is renowned for his deceptive "chinaman" deliveries and mastery of flight and variations.

Yadav made his international debut for India in a Test match against Australia on March 25, 2017, in Dharamshala. He recorded a highly memorable first outing, claiming 4 wickets for 68 runs in the first innings and becoming the first left-arm wrist-spinner to play Test cricket for India.

5. Prasidh Krishna

Making his international debut for India on March 23, 2021, Prasidh Krishna had a sensational start to his career. He had a sensational start, taking 4 wickets for 54 runs, which set the record for the best bowling figures by an Indian on ODI debut.

With the main pace ace, Jasprit Bumrah, rested, Krishna’s selection is highly important because he is projected to share the new ball in both the Test and ODI formats.

6. Washington Sundar

Sundar’s international career has been marred heavily due to injuries. Nonetheless, Washington Sundar has once again been named in India's squads for both the one-off Test and the three-match ODI series against Afghanistan, which will take place in June 2026.

He will serve as a spin-bowling all-rounder option for the team across both formats.

7. Harsh Dubey

Among many new faces, Harsh Dubey has also received a maiden India call-up. It is worth noting that Dubey is a promising left-arm spin-bowling all-rounder representing Vidarbha in domestic cricket and Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL.

He gained attention after setting a Ranji Trophy record with 69 wickets in a single season, surpassing the previous mark of 68.

8. Gurnoor Brar

Skipper Shubman Gill’s mate from IPL franchise, Gujarat Titans and domestic side, Punjab, Gurnoor Brar, has earned his maiden national call-up to the Indian cricket team.

The Punjab pacer has been selected in the 15-member squad for both the one-off Test (June 6–10) and the subsequent three-match ODI series.

India will play Afghanistan in a one-off Test at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh PCA Stadium, starting from June 6.

Followed by the three-match ODI series will begin on June 14 and will run till June 20. The first ODI will be held at the HPCA cricket stadium in Dharamsala, while the subsequent matches will be held in Lucknow and Chennai.
