Cricket Australia officially confirmed the schedule for the WBBL 2026 season, wherein 8 teams will compete in the country’s biggest domestic competition. The 12th edition will be played across 38 days with 43 matches in total.
The WBBL 2026 season will begin on October 29 at the Junction Oval Stadium. This opening game will be the first-ever night T20 match at the Oval because new floodlights are being installed.
WBBL 2026 to begin with a double-header
Meanwhile, the WBBL 2026 will begin with a double-header at the Junction Oval. Melbourne Renegades will take on Sydney Thunder, followed by the Melbourne Stars vs Hobart Hurricanes game. In total, the tournament will have 14 double-headers.
One of the biggest changes in the 2026 schedule is the increased emphasis on Thursday-to-Sunday fixtures. Cricket Australia hopes the revised scheduling will improve television audiences while attracting larger crowds across the competition.
Following the conclusion of the league phase, the finals will proceed in the familiar format. The Knockout match between the third- and fourth-placed teams will be played on December 1.
The winner of that contest will then face the second-ranked team in the Challenger, with the victor advancing to the final against the league leaders. The finale will be held on December 5.

Hobart Hurricanes will start as defending champions
Meanwhile, the Hobart Hurricanes enter the WBBL 2026 season as defending champions after lifting their maiden WBBL title last season.
Their triumph marked a historic achievement for the franchise, and they will now look to defend the trophy against seven other teams aiming to dethrone them.
Meanwhile, the Brisbane Heat will be eager to bounce back after enduring a difficult campaign last season, finishing at the bottom of the table without registering a single victory.
Will WBBL arrive in India?
Having said that, a few weeks ago, there were speculations that BBL would expand overseas to increase fan engagement. Apparently, the board was planning to start the season in India. However, Cricket Australia has confirmed that the WBBL opener will remain on Australian soil.
Cricket Australia Executive General Manager of Big Bash Leagues, Alistair Dobson, said the board never seriously considered launching the women's tournament outside Australia. However, he did leave the door open for future expansion.
"The WBBL is the best cricket league in the world for women and deserves to be played in the right spots to help it grow. There's been a focus on where we might kick off the BBL season, and we're hoping for some announcements in the next couple of weeks on that alongside the BBL schedule. But to be able to grow the WBBL in different markets is really important ... so I'd never say never on that," he told reporters.
For now, fans in Australia can enjoy the WBBL 2026 season as it aims to enhance women’s cricket standards in the country.
