LSG’s rain-curtailed match with defending champions RCB went down to the wire at the Ekana Stadium in Lucknow on Thursday, May 7. The home franchise eventually prevailed in a high-scoring thriller in match number 50 of the IPL 2026 season.

However, prior to the last over of the match, an intense fight broke out between LSG spinners Digvesh Rathi and Shahbaz Ahmed. LSG spinners Digvesh Rathi and Shahbaz Ahmed were spotted having an intense conversation with each other, and with their captain Rishabh Pant prior to the final over of the match against the RCB on May 7.

With RCB requiring 20 runs off the final over, LSG captain Pant made the brave call of employing a spinner against the likes of hard-hitting and unbeaten batters Romario Shepherd and Krunal Pandya.

The skipper’s gamble of handing the ball over to Digvesh Rathi eventually paid off, as the 26-year-old conceded just 10 runs from the last over as the LSG franchise seized a thrilling nine-run win (DLS method).

Both spinners apparently wanted to bowl the final over, at a time when the RCB franchise required 20 runs to win from the final six balls.

Captain Rishabh Pant eventually jumped in and mediated and employed Rathi to bowl the decisive over, even though the 26-year-old had proven more expensive at the time than Shahbaz.

Digvesh Rathi more expensive than Shahbaz in the game

Interestingly, Digvesh Rathi had conceded 41 runs from his first three overs before bowling the final over of the game. The cricketer proved out to be much more expensive than his spin colleague Shahbaz Ahmed in the match.

Before Pant decided to throw the ball to Rathi, Shahbaz was sitting on an impressive spell of 2-33 from his three overs. Apart from conceding eight runs lesser than Rathi at that stage, the 31-year-old had also taken the important wickets of RCB captain Rajat Patidar and Australian T20 radical Tim David.

LSG still in the hunt for an unlikely IPL 2026 playoffs spot

Batting first, hosts LSG mounted 209-3 in a 19-over game amid rain interruptions in Lucknow. Blistering opener Mitchell Marsh smashed 111 runs off just 56 balls with nine boundaries and nine huge sixes.

Racing to his hundred from just 49 deliveries, Marsh notched up the fastest-ever century in the history of the LSG franchise.

Nicholas Pooran at number three made 38 from 23, and captain Rishabh Pant launched four fours and two sixes in his thunderous 10-ball 32* at the death.

Chasing a revised target of 213, RCB managed just 203-6 in response after losing both openers, Jacob Bethell and Virat Kohli within the first couple of overs. Captain Rajat Patidar fought on at number three with an exuberant 31-ball 61, but a tight spell from Prince Yadav (3-33) and a crucial two-fer from Shahbaz Ahmed tilted the tide in LSG’s favour.

The outcome helped the LSG franchise to remain in contention for the IPL 2026 playoff race.
