The defending champions, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, missed their chance to go top of the table on Thursday night as they faced the Lucknow Super Giants away from home.

After the Punjab Kings lost three in a row, this was the first time in a long time that RCB had a shot at claiming the top place on the IPL 2026 table. However, following the 9-run defeat in Lucknow, they remain third on the points table with 12 points.

Having won the toss, they were taken to the cleaners by a Mitchell Marsh century, as he finished with 111 off 56 to take LSG to 209/3 in a rain-affected 19-over innings. In response, their run-chase was jolted by an impressive Prince Yadav spell of 3/33 (4).

They were reduced to 9/2 in 8 balls, including a duck for Kohli, and despite efforts from Rajat Patidar (61 off 31) and Tim David (40 off 17), they could only manage 203/6. Romario Shepherd (23* off 15) and Krunal Pandya (28* off 16) also made crucial contributions.

As they look to finish in the top-4 and potentially secure a top-2 finish after two losses on the trot, we explore the qualification scenarios.

How can RCB qualify for the IPL 2026 playoffs?

As the Rajat Patidar-led RCB look to defend their maiden IPL title, they are still well-positioned to finish in the top-4, with four league matches still to go. They have 12 points in 10 matches, with six wins and four losses, and the net run-rate of +1.234 is the best in the competition.

To qualify for the playoffs, RCB will need to finish at 16 points or more, which means they need to win only two of the remaining four league matches to head to the playoffs.

Ideally, they would want to play Qualifier 1 with a top-2 finish, which would give them two shots at reaching the final. To secure a top-2 spot, RCB would need three wins in four matches, where they will have a chance to topple either the Punjab Kings or the Sunrisers Hyderabad on the table.

What are RCB’s remaining games of IPL 2026?

Following the game against LSG, RCB is set to play two of their four matches at Raipur, which is their second home this season. Up next, they will take on the Mumbai Indians, followed by the Kolkata Knight Riders in Raipur.

Then, they will travel away to Dharamsala and Hyderabad for the four-pointer matches against the Punjab Kings and the Sunrisers Hyderabad — both above them on the table currently.
