Zimbabwe opener Brian Bennett had an awkward interaction with an Indian journalist right after he smashed 97* against India in the recent Super 8 game of the ICC T20 World Cup 2026. But Bennett handled it maturely with a classic response.
Brian Bennett responded to India’s 256-run total with intent. He hammered 97 off just 59 balls with a 164.41 strike rate. However, he missed out on a historic hundred by just 3 runs.

Indian journalist humbled by Brian Bennett
While Zimbabwe lost the game by 72 runs, Brian Bennett had his heroic moment with an unbeaten 97. However, the century milestone fell out of his reach.
Meanwhile, during the post-match press conference, Bennett was quizzed about the same, but the Indian journalist messed up his question.
He confused Brian for coach Justin Sammons and asked, “Bennett had a good chance to score a century. A century in a World Cup is always special. Why did your batters not give him a chance to score a century?”
Brian Bennett, visibly confused, corrected the journalist, saying, “I’m Bennett.”

The whole interaction left everyone in splits, and the clip of the entire incident went viral on social media. While some fans laughed at the hilarious moment, others slammed the journalist for being misinformed.
Brian Bennett scripts history
That being said, on the field, Brian Bennett had the best day of his life on Thursday. Against India, he scored 97* runs to take Zimbabwe to 184/6. While his team lost the game, Bennett achieved a personal milestone.
He is the second cricketer in T20 World Cup history to score 90+ runs against India, thus surpassing West Indies legend Chris Gayle.
Chris Gayle had earlier smashed 98 off 66 balls against India in the 2010 T20 World Cup in Bridgetown.
That innings stood alone for 16 years as the only 90+ score against India in T20 World Cup history. Now, Bennett has matched that elite milestone with his 97*.
India’s qualification scenario for the semi-finals
With a 72-run victory against Zimbabwe, India have kept their semi-final qualification hopes alive. However, qualification is now very straightforward and slightly tricky.
If India defeat the West Indies in their final Super 8s match at Eden Gardens on March 1, they will qualify for the semifinals. India will move to 4 points, while West Indies will remain on 2 points.
India will also finish second in Group 1 behind South Africa, who have already qualified. So for the men in blue, the qualification equation is simple. Win and go through.
But on the flip side, if India lose, both teams will finish on 2 points. West Indies will stay ahead due to a much better Net Run Rate (NRR), and India will finish third and be eliminated.
Also, if rain causes a no-result, both teams will get 1 point each, and the West Indies will qualify because of their superior NRR.
