The India vs West Indies T20 World Cup virtual quarterfinal will take place on Sunday as the two teams will collide in Kolkata to decide who will join South Africa in the semifinals of the marquee event. However, with two days left for the match, Kolkata witnessed a massive earthquake on Friday afternoon.

According to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS), the earthquake was registered at a magnitude of 5.5 on the Richter Scale, and it shook the entire city. The tremor that struck at a depth of 10 km had its epicenter in Southwestern Bangladesh.

The India vs West Indies clash will occur at the Eden Gardens, and the fresh tremors on Friday afternoon have shaken up the city, and fans are worried that it could potentially play a spoilsport on Sunday.

Will India vs West Indies be affected by Kolkata earthquake?

Normally, an earthquake can occur more than once in the same location. They often take place in sequence, with a small tremor taking place first, followed by a big shockwave. Unless the city doesn’t witness another earthquake, the match will go smoothly as planned.

However, if yet another unfortunate event takes place before Sunday, the game could be in jeopardy. As of Friday evening, the match will go ahead as both India and West Indies will aim to reach the semifinals of the T20 World Cup.

What happens if the game gets called-off on Sunday?

There are no reserve days for T20 World Cup Super 8 matches, and if the India vs West Indies crucial game gets called-off due to this unfortunate reason, the Windies will go through to the next round.

South Africa has qualified for the semis from India’s group, and the winner of the West Indies vs India will join them. However, in case the match doesn’t commence, the Men in Maroon will go through on the basis of a superior net run-rate.

West Indies’ net run-rate is +1.791, while India stands at -0.100. As a result, the Windies will progress to the semifinals.

How India and West Indies have fared in Super 8 so far

India topped their group in the T20 World Cup, and were placed alongside South Africa, West Indies, and Zimbabwe. The Men in Blue started the Super 8 with an embarrassing defeat against the Proteas. The team lost the game by 76 runs, and it impacted their net run-rate.

It was followed by a one-sided win over the Zimbabwean side as India will now face the Windies in a do-or-die game. Talking about the Windies, they hammered Zimbabwe in the first game of the Super 8, and it was followed by a one-sided beating at the hands of South Africa.

With the Windies losing against South Africa, and India beating the Chevrons, the net run-rate is currently out of equation, unless rain occurs, or tremors in Kolkata disallows the game to be played at the Eden Gardens on Sunday.
