South African spinner Tabraiz Shamsi had fun banter with Indian cricketer Yuzvendra Chahal on social media after South Africa crushed the West Indies in the Super 8 clash of the ICC T20 World Cup 2026.

The Proteas chased down a challenging total of 177 runs in just 16.1 overs with 9 wickets to spare. With that commanding victory, South Africa booked their semi-final berth from Group 1.

However, what caught fans’ attention was a playful banter between two quality spinners, Shamsi and Chahal.

Tabraiz Shamsi gets badly humbled by Yuzvendra Chahal

It all began when Tabraiz Shamsi dropped praise for Lungi Ngidi on X. Ngidi had rattled the West Indies with a 3-wicket-haul on Thursday and was simply unplayable.

But Shamsi also boasted about his hitting skills, saying only he can smash sixes off Ngidi’s bowling, while for everyone else, that skill is still hard to master.

While it was a playful dig, Yuzvendra Chahal entered the picture out of nowhere. He dropped a comment on his tweet to humble Tabraiz Shamsi, saying, "True, my bru but only with your tongue because you only talk.”

Shamsi immediately responded by inviting Chahal for a 6-ball hitting challenge to put his hitting ability to the test.

The banter went viral on social media as fans hailed Yuzvendra Chahal for humbling Tabraiz Shamsi. However, it's also important to note that this exchange was purely fun, and neither player threw serious punches at the other.

Tabraiz Shamsi hailed Lungi Ngidi

That being said, Tabraiz Shamsi has always been a fan of Lungi Ngidi. Before the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 tournament began, Shamsi spoke highly of Ngidi and hailed his resilience despite inconsistent chances.

“I’m flipping over the moon for Lungi. He's been in and out of the previous World Cup. I think he was part of the reserves, and he's always putting in work behind the scenes like everyone else. But to have that resilience in order to just make it count, that's what's important,” Shamsi told SportsBoom.co.za.

Tabraiz Shamsi added that being in and out of the team takes a toll on players, and Lungi Ngidi is no different. But for him to stay disciplined and motivated speaks volumes about the kind of athlete he is.

“He's one of our most dependable bowlers now, not only now in this World Cup, but I suppose in the last year as well. He's shown that he's somebody that you can throw the ball to if there's a little bit of a dodgy situation for the team. To win back-to-back World Cup Man of the Match, that's not a joke either. That's the kind of guy he is,” he added.

South Africa advances into the semi-finals

Meanwhile, South Africa have qualified for the semi-finals of the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 after beating the West Indies by 9 wickets in their previous Super 8 fixture.

Batting first, the Windies recovered from 83/7 to 176/8 owing to an 89-run partnership between Jason Holder (49) and Romario Shepherd (52*).

However, the chase turned out to be a cakewalk for South Africa. Aiden Markram and Quinton de Kock came out all guns blazing, scoring 82* and 47 runs, respectively, to form a 95-run opening stand.

Ryan Rickelton added 45* more runs to help the Proteas complete the chase in just 16.1 overs.
