It is understood that the two countries announced an "open war" after carrying out air strikes on each other. Reportedly, the Taliban was the first to conduct air strikes using drones on the military targets in Pakistan along the Durand Line. It was followed up with Pakistan carrying out attacks on the provinces of Afghanistan, including Kabul and Kandahar, on Friday.

As per a report from Al Jazeera, Pakistan has stated that they have killed 133 Taliban fighters, while 55 Pakistani soldiers have been assassinated by the Taliban. The two Asian countries have been neck-to-neck for a considerable period now. Meanwhile, countries around the world, excluding India, have urged the warring parties to show restraint.
Pakistan-Afghanistan on cricketing field
In the recent times, the Pakistan-Afghanistan rivalry has become one of the most closely fought battles. Although the Men in Green own the bragging rights, leading by 6-4 in T20Is and 7-1 in ODIs, Afghanistan have started to give Pakistan run for its money in recent times.
Notably, ahead of the 2025 Asia Cup, Afghanistan self-proclaimed itself as the second-best in Asia after India. However, the two teams didn't face each other in the Asia Cup or in the T20 World Cup 2026. It is worth mentioning that Afghanistan, led by Rashid Khan, were knocked out of the group stages in both tournaments.
Moreover, Rahmanullah Gurbaz was signed by Peshawar Zalmi for the upcoming edition of the Pakistan Premier League, but he pulled his name withdrawn his name, citing personal commitments and a busy schedule after backlash on social media. Later, the Pakistan Cricket Board banned Afghanistan players to participate in the league only after various cricketers exited.
Pakistan still in race for semifinals
Despite a heartbreaking loss to arch-rivals India in the group stage, Pakistan have made a turnaround in the ongoing T20 World Cup. The Salman Agha-led side will next be seen in action on Saturday against Sri Lanka in a must-win game.
But the qualification for Pakistan depends on the result of the England-New Zealand match on Friday. The Men in Green would need England to defeat the Kiwis in that game. Later, they will have to beat Sri Lanka in record time to improve their Net Run Rate.
