Virat Kohli, the legendary Indian cricketer, is in the news for something unrelated to cricket or IPL. The latest unusual activity on his Instagram has sparked a frenzy among fans on social media.
Kohli is the most popular cricketer globally when it comes to social media followers. On Instagram, he has over 270 million followers, while on X, he has 67+ million followers.
Virat Kohli’s IG followers drop after Meta update
Meanwhile, RCB star Virat Kohli saw a massive drop in Instagram followers after Meta’s latest platform update, which appears to be broadly linked to a larger cleanup drive affecting several global celebrities and athletes.
According to reports, Kohli’s follower count reportedly dipped from around 276 million to 274 million over the last couple of days.
The reported update by Meta, the parent company of Instagram, is said to target fake accounts, bots, inactive profiles, and artificial engagement mechanisms across the platform.
Several international stars, including Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, Neymar, Selena Gomez and Justin Bieber, have also reportedly seen fluctuations in follower counts during the same period.
Hence, the dip in followers count is completely unrelated to Virat Kohli and his popularity. It’s an update from Meta that has led to such a large-scale shake-up.

Virat Kohli is currently busy in the IPL 2026
That being said, Virat Kohli is miles away from the social media buzz as his focus remains on the ongoing IPL 2026 season. Playing for defending champions RCB, Kohli has scored 379 runs in 10 innings at an average of 47.38, including three fifties.
As an opener, Kohli has shown consistent form to give RCB the best possible start. However, in RCB’s last game against LSG, the 37-year-old endured a rare failure.
Prince Yadav’s unplayable inswinger crashed into the stumps, and Virat Kohli walked back on a 2-ball duck in a high-scoring run chase. His early dismissal eventually cost RCB the game.
RCB fall short against LSG
LSG, the bottom place holders in IPL 2026, gave a strong fight to defending champions RCB at the Ekana Stadium on May 7. Batting first, Mitchell Marsh smashed 111 off 56 balls despite repeated rain interruptions.
In a game that was reduced to 19 overs per side, LSG finished at 209/3. Meanwhile, RCB got a revised DLS target of 213, and Virat Kohli couldn’t trouble the scoreboard.
While Devdutt Padikkal and Rajat Patidar stitched an 85-run partnership, Prince Yadav got LSG back into the game with a three-wicket-haul. Despite Tim David and Krunal Pandya’s late blitz, RCB fell short by 9 runs to face their fourth defeat of the season.
RCB retain third spot on the points table with 12 points in 10 games. However, they still need to win at least 2 more games to qualify for the playoffs.
