Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) seems to be taking drastic steps against Sri Lanka A players involved in a controversial face-off against India A opener Vaibhav Sooryavanshi on Monday, June 15. A couple of Sri Lanka A players, including Vishen Halambage, were involved in a fiery verbal and physical exchange with the 15-year-old shortly after the thrilling Super Over between the two sides.
Match referee Pradeep Jeyapragash has now announced a sanction on the players involved, as per recent reports. Moreover, Jeyapragash has also apparently imposed a fine on senior wicketkeeper-batter Niroshan Dickwella, who appeared to be a peacemaker during the incident.
Sri Lanka A players punished for Sooryavanshi fight
As reported by Cricbuzz, match referee Pradeep Jeyapragash has announced sanction for Sri Lanka A batting all-rounder Vishen Halambage for his on-field spat with Vaibhav Sooryavanshi.

The referee, a former Sri Lanka cricketer himself, also imposed a fine on senior wicketkeeper-batter Niroshan Dickwella, who appeared to be a peacemaker during the incident. However, Dickwella is understood to have been charged for a separate offence and it is not related to altercation between Sooryavanshi and Vishen Halambage.
The exact nature of Niroshan Dickwella’s breach is yet to be determined.
No clarity on Vaibhav Sooryanvanshi yet
The report also stated it is still unclear whether any sanctions have been imposed on India A opener and rising Vaibhav Sooryavanshi for his involvement in the incident. The Indian cricketer was seen getting physical with Vishen Halambage shortly after the conclusion of the thrilling Super Over between the two sides.
What happened between Sooryavanshi and Sri Lanka A players
Soon after Sri Lanka A’s thrilling victory over India A in the Super Over, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi approached Vishen Halambage and the two cricketers were involved in a fiery verbal exchange with each other. The young Indian opener even physically pushed the Sri Lankan all-rounder at one stage, before senior man Niroshan Dickwella intervened between the two players.
A viral footage of the same circulating on social media indicates that it were the Sri Lankan players who abused an outbound Sooryavanshi, thus provoking the 15-year-old to return the pitch after initially making his way to the dugout.
Since the incident, Sooryavanshi has been widely criticized by several cricket fans for his on-field misconduct. Sri Lanka’s Vishen Halambage, on the other hand, quit his Instagram account after the fight, presumably to avoid getting abuses from fans of the Indian youngster.
India loses self-demanded Super Over
Earlier in the game, India A skipper Tilak Varma also argued with the umpires to carry on with the Super Over after a thrilling tie, even when the umpires appeared reluctant owing to bad light in Dambulla.
India A ended up losing the match to Sri Lanka A, with Vaibhav Sooryavanshi himself failing to notch up the winning runs. Overall, the thrilling affair between the two sides turned out to be an ill-tempered contest, marred with quarrels, physical confrontation and even bizarre penalty runs for both sides.
