Cricket is a passionate sport, and in tense situations, emotions tend to soar high. The Indian cricket team have also had their fair share of ups and downs when it comes to heated on-field moments.

From Virat Kohli to Gautam Gambhir, a few passionate and aggressive players have had moments where emotions got the better of them.

As Vaibhav Sooryavanshi faces heat for shoving a Sri Lanka A player, let’s revisit five times where Indian players lost their cool and had physical altercations on the field.

Gautam Gambhir vs Shahid Afridi - 2007

Few rivalries in cricket are as intense as India versus Pakistan, and the clash between Gautam Gambhir and Shahid Afridi during an ODI in Kanpur perfectly illustrated why. After hitting Afridi for a boundary, Gambhir attempted a quick single on the following delivery.

As the two players crossed paths, they collided heavily in the middle of the pitch. What followed was an explosive face-to-face confrontation, with both players exchanging angry words while umpires rushed in to separate them. Match referee Roshan Mahanama later imposed substantial fines on both players, with Afridi receiving a particularly severe penalty.

Gautam Gambhir vs Shane Watson - 2008

One of the most controversial moments of the 2008 Border-Gavaskar Trophy unfolded during the third Test in Delhi. While Gautam Gambhir was compiling a magnificent double century, tensions between him and Australian all-rounder Shane Watson simmered throughout the innings.

The tensions peaked when Gambhir appeared to deliberately elbow Watson while running between the wickets. The incident led to outrage, with Australian players claiming it was intentional. Gautam Gambhir defended himself by stating that he was simply trying to avoid a collision, but match officials disagreed. The ICC found him guilty of a Level 2 offence and handed him a one-Test suspension.

Ravindra Jadeja vs James Anderson - 2014

Not all cricket altercations happen on the field. During the first Test between India and England at Trent Bridge in 2014, a verbal disagreement between Ravindra Jadeja and James Anderson allegedly escalated inside the pavilion. Reports claimed that Anderson shoved Jadeja as players walked through a narrow corridor during the lunch break.

The allegation was serious enough to trigger an ICC investigation and a formal judicial hearing. However, due to the absence of conclusive video evidence from the corridor, the ICC ultimately cleared both players of the most serious charges.

MS Dhoni vs Mustafizur Rahman - 2015

Few expected the usually composed MS Dhoni to become involved in a physical confrontation, but an ODI against Bangladesh in 2015 produced exactly that. During India's chase, Bangladesh pacer Mustafizur Rahman repeatedly found himself in the path of Indian batters while they were running between the wickets.

Frustration boiled over when Dhoni collided with the young bowler while attempting a quick single, sending Mustafizur tumbling to the ground. The action caused outrage, and match officials deemed both players responsible for inappropriate physical contact and imposed hefty fines.

Virat Kohli vs Sam Konstas - 2024

The 2024 Boxing Day Test at the MCG witnessed another dramatic confrontation where Virat Kohli and Australian debutant Sam Konstas collided while crossing paths between overs. Television replays suggested Kohli altered his line and made shoulder contact with the young batter, prompting an immediate exchange of words.

Senior Australian batter Usman Khawaja had to intervene to calm the situation before it escalated further. Match officials later sanctioned Kohli with a financial penalty, but fans continued to debate whether the contact was deliberate.
