Former Indian cricketer Suresh Raina is willing to return to Chennai Super Kings (CSK) but in a different role. He apparently offered to serve as a coach for the upcoming IPL 2027 season.

CSK are going through a transition phase as they sacked Stephen Fleming at the end of the IPL 2026 season. And for their next phase, former Indian pacer Zaheer Khan has been appointed as head coach.

Suresh Raina wants to join Zaheer Khan-led CSK support staff

Meanwhile, ex-CSK legend Suresh Raina is interested in joining this new coaching setup and embarking on a new era for CSK in IPL 2027. Apparently, Raina has already approached the management and is willing to accept any role, rather than insisting on becoming the batting coach or taking a particular position.

"I have already asked them. It's on them now. I would love to work in any role. For me, as long as I'm with the boys and they are winning trophies, that's what matters. Yellow matters to us," Raina said on R Ashwin’s YT channel.

He also said that being with the players and helping CSK win trophies matters more to him than the designation. Notably, CSK’s current management includes Mohit Sharma, Albie Morkel and Gareth Batty.

Currently, CSK are against the idea of appointing a designated batting coach, as Batty is expected to serve as overall mentor. Hence, Suresh Raina’s comeback to CSK, under such circumstances, remains unlikely.

Why is Raina important to CSK?

Having said that, Suresh Raina’s inclusion in the coaching setup could be a game changer for CSK. He is one of the most successful players in the franchise’s history.

Raina spent more than a decade with CSK, winning as many as five titles. In all title-winning seasons, the ex-cricketer played a crucial role as a batter and as an agile fielder.

Hence, his experience of playing under MS Dhoni and understanding CSK's team culture could be valuable in a coaching role. However, for now, CSK is likely planning to stick with Zaheer Khan and his men to see if the tables turn in the IPL 2027 season.
