Related to 'Spirit Of Cricket, Steve Smith had a controversial moment on the field during Day 1 of the first Test match between Australia and Bangladesh at Marrara Cricket Ground, Darwin.
During the 21st over of Australia’s innings, Smith, while facing Ebadot Hossain, had a ball go past his bat before it went to the big gloves of Litton Das. Just when he was about to walk off, thinking he had been caught behind, he decided to stay to see what the on-field umpire, Kumar Dharmasena, had in mind.
And Dharmasena nodded his head, saying Smith was not out. Immediately after, Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto signalled T to take the DRS, with the body language showing he was confident that Smith was gone.
However, third-umpire Nitin Menon found no spike in the Real-Time Snickometer (RTS), and thus, he stayed with the on-field umpires’ decision.
Steve Smith Admits He Was Out In Press Conference
Smith eventually fell to Hasan Mahmud, who had a day to remember, after scoring a gritty 71. He was on 7* when the DRS controversy happened. Given that Australia could only muster 198, they could have had a miserable day with the bat had Smith not stayed as long as he did.
Speaking at the press conference, Steve Smith was asked whether he felt he nicked behind. There, the 37-year-old honestly admitted that he knew the bat touched the ball, but would only have walked off had the umpire raised his finger.
Smith also commented on DRS technology during the conversation with the journalist.

Journalist: Did you nick that?
Steve Smith: I think so, yeah! I was lucky? Yeah, it seems that way. Yeah, you've got to take it sometimes (laughs).
Journalist: Do you have to trust technology there?
Steve Smith: Normally, it’s pretty good. Maybe I didn’t nick it. I don’t know. But I certainly felt something. If I had given out, I was going to walk off. But yeah, technology saved me today, I guess.

Spirit Of Cricket Debate: A Few Blasts From The Past
The spirit of cricket debate often comes to the fore whenever something unusual happens on the field. Steve Smith’s incident was something like that, and there were plenty of incidents in the past that often grabbed the limelight in a similar way.
To give a few examples, R Ashwin dismissed Jos Buttler at the non-striker’s end during IPL 2019. It triggered the Spirit of Cricket debate back then.
During the World Cup 2023 clash between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, Angelo Mathews was given out via a ‘Timed Out’ appeal, done by Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan.
