Mitchell Starc Achieves Major Test Cricket Milestone In AUS vs BAN 1st Test

Mitchell Starc added another major milestone to his remarkable Test career on Thursday, producing yet another memorable moment with the new ball during Australia's opening Test against Bangladesh in Darwin.

The achievement came on International Left-Handers Day, making the occasion even more special for the Australian left-arm quick. After years of dominating with the red ball, Starc once again found himself in the record books.

Mitchell Starc Becomes Test Cricket’s Leading Left-Arm Wicket-Taker

As usual, Starc was handed the new ball for Australia and wasted little time making his presence felt. He eventually found the first breakthrough for Australia, getting Shadman Islam to edge one towards the gully, where Nathan Lyon completed the catch.

The wicket was far more significant than just an early breakthrough. It took Starc to 434 Test wickets, allowing him to move past Sri Lankan legend Rangana Herath, who finished his career with 433 wickets.

With that dismissal, Starc became the leading wicket-taker in Test cricket among left-arm bowlers. It was another remarkable achievement for a bowler who has been one of Australia's biggest weapons in the longest format for more than a decade.

Starc Makes History on a Special Day for Left-Handers

What made the achievement even more special was the timing. Mitchell Starc reached the landmark on International Left-Handers Day, making the occasion almost perfectly suited to one of cricket's most successful left-arm bowlers.

There is already a strong argument that Starc is among the greatest left-arm fast bowlers to ever play the game. Now, he also owns the record for most Test wickets by a left-arm bowler, adding another major achievement to his remarkable career.

In international cricket overall, Pakistan legend Wasim Akram remains the leading left-arm bowler with 916 wickets across formats. Chaminda Vaas follows him with 761, while Starc is just one wicket behind on 760 as of writing.

Australia Turn to Starc After Difficult Day 1 vs Bangladesh

Mitchell Starc's historic moment, however, came on a difficult Day 1 of first Test against Bangladesh for Australia. The hosts chose to bat first but struggled badly, getting bowled out for just 198 thanks to a remarkable performance from Hasan Mahmud.

Bangladesh then made a strong start with the bat and looked comfortable towards the end of the day's play. Starc did provide Australia with their first breakthrough by removing Shadman, but Bangladesh still finished the day in a very strong position.

That makes Starc's role even more important heading into Day 2. Australia have relied heavily on him in recent years, and now with Bangladesh looking to build a sizeable first-innings lead after destroying Australia with the ball, the hosts will need Starc at his very best.
