Sri Lanka, on Wednesday, announced a 15-member squad for the 1st Test of the upcoming two-match Test series against India, scheduled to get underway on August 15 at Galle International Stadium.

Sri Lanka last hosted a Test series against India back in 2017. There, India, under the leadership of Virat Kohli, whitewashed Sri Lanka by 3-0. 

The series opener was in Galle, where India defeated Sri Lanka by 304 runs before going on to register two more commanding wins: by an innings and 71 runs and by an innings and 171 runs.

While the Sri Lankan squad has been hit with many injury blows this time around, there are quite a few candidates who can potentially turn the tide all by themselves under Dhananjaya de Silva.

Prabath Jayasuriya

With seven wickets in three innings, Asitha Fernando finished as the leading wicket-taker in Sri Lanka’s Test series in West Indies. Amid Sri Lanka’s dismal show, Fernando stepped up and bagged a five-wicket haul before coming to India vs Sri Lanka Tests.

Compared to other Sri Lankan pacers, Asitha Fernando’s strike rate in Tests is highly impressive. Despite the fact that his Galle record is not extremely great, having got 16 wickets in as many Test innings speak volumes, he is the man in form for Sri Lanka, and can do significant damage with an aim to to improve his numbers there.
