Sri Lanka, on Wednesday, announced a 15-member squad for the 1st Test of the upcoming two-match Test series against India, scheduled to get underway on August 15 at Galle International Stadium.

Sri Lanka last hosted a Test series against India back in 2017. There, India, under the leadership of Virat Kohli, whitewashed Sri Lanka by 3-0.

The series opener was in Galle, where India defeated Sri Lanka by 304 runs before going on to register two more commanding wins: by an innings and 71 runs and by an innings and 171 runs.

While the Sri Lankan squad has been hit with many injury blows this time around, there are quite a few candidates who can potentially turn the tide all by themselves under Dhananjaya de Silva.

Here, in this article, we take a look at three most prominent names from Sri Lanka who can help their side to put up a spirited fight against India, if not a 2-0 whitewash. If that happens, Gautam Gambhir's job as India's head coach could, in all likelihood, be done and dusted.

Nishan Madushka

Sri Lanka’s wicket-keeper batter Nishan Madushka made an unbeaten 63 and 66 in the recent warm-up match against India. Besides, he has had a significant record while playing Tests in India, compared to his overall Test numbers: 622 runs in 22 innings at an average of 29.61.

Madushka took the big gloves behind the stumps last time in 2024. However, with Kusal Mendis out injured, don’t be surprised if he takes it back once again during India vs Sri Lanka Tests.

Prabath Jayasuriya

With the ball in hand, Prabath Jayasuriya has been exceptionally well in Sri Lanka Tests. Moreover, Galle has been his most favourite venue, being there in the list of highest-wicket takers only behind Muttiah Muralitharan (111 wickets at a strike rate of 51.59) and Rangana Herath (102 wickets at 54.38).

Even though Prabath Jayasuriya is yet to play a Test match against India, he could be the man leading the pack in order to stun Shubman Gill and his boys.

Asitha Fernando

With seven wickets in three innings, Asitha Fernando finished as the leading wicket-taker in Sri Lanka’s Test series in West Indies. Amid Sri Lanka’s dismal show, Fernando stepped up and bagged a five-wicket haul before coming to India vs Sri Lanka Tests.

Compared to other Sri Lankan pacers, Asitha Fernando’s strike rate in Tests is highly impressive. Despite the fact that his Galle record is not extremely great, having got 16 wickets in as many Test innings speak volumes, he is the man in form for Sri Lanka, and can do significant damage with an aim to to improve his numbers there.

Conclusion

Gambhir’s recent results as India head coach have already been questioned due to his surprising calls to make playing XIs as well as the squads. Therefore, the upcoming India tour of Sri Lanka would be a major assignment for him if he wants to stay there, at least till the World Cup 2027.

And these three names from Sri Lanka could be the ones to watch out for if that actually happens for real.
