Shane Watson's association with the Knight Riders group is becoming stronger with every new assignment.
After joining Kolkata Knight Riders as an assistant coach for IPL 2026 and later taking up a mentoring role with Los Angeles Knight Riders in Major League Cricket (MLC), the former Australian all-rounder has now added another Knight Riders franchise to his coaching journey.
Abu Dhabi Knight Riders have appointed Shane Watson as their mentor for season 5 of the International League T20 (ILT20).
The upcoming ILT20, which is the fifth season of the tournament, will begin on November 22 and run till December 20. The league will consist of the usual 34 matches, 30 in the league stage and four playoffs.
The six teams that are part of the tournament include - Abu Dhabi Knight Riders, Desert Vipers, Dubai Capitals, Gulf Giants, MI Emirates and Sharjah Warriorz.
Shane Watson Joins Abu Dhabi Knight Riders
Abu Dhabi Knight Riders confirmed Shane Watson's appointment on August 13 via social media. The move comes shortly after his successful stint with Los Angeles Knight Riders during MLC 2026.

Watson was appointed mentor of LAKR before the 2026 season, having previously worked with KKR in the IPL. Los Angeles went on to enjoy a remarkable campaign, reaching their first MLC final and defeating Washington Freedom by one run at Oakland Coliseum on July 18.

Shane Watson's Coaching CV
Shane Watson's coaching career started after his first major IPL coaching opportunity came with Delhi Capitals, where he was appointed assistant coach in 2022 under Ricky Ponting. He remained with the franchise through the 2023 season.
In IPL 2022, Delhi Capitals finished in fifth position with 7 wins in 14 matches.
He then moved with the San Francisco Unicorns in Major League Cricket. Watson became the franchise’s first head coach and spent three seasons building the team from its early stages.
The Unicorns confirmed his departure in October 2025 after three seasons. In 2025, the San Francisco Unicorns finished third with 7 wins and 14 points.
In Pakistan, Watson took charge of Quetta Gladiators as head coach for the PSL 2024 season. The team finished in fourth place with 5 wins in 10 matches and 11 points.
His return to the IPL came when KKR appointed him assistant coach for the 2026 campaign.
Will KKR Appoint Shane Watson As Head Coach In IPL 2027?
Shane Watson's latest move is likely to fuel speculation about his long-term future with KKR. However, there is currently no confirmed indication that the franchise plans to replace Abhishek Nayar with Watson before IPL 2027.
Nayar was appointed KKR’s head coach in October 2025, succeeding Chandrakant Pandit. Watson joined the setup as assistant coach.
KKR's 2026 campaign ended without a playoff appearance, which could lead to changes in the support structure. The Kolkata-based franchise finished seventh with just 6 wins in 14 matches.
After the poor performance, there was a buzz on the social media that KKR might go with Shane Watson before IPL 2027.
