West Indies head coach Daren Sammy sought desperate help on social media as his team remained stranded in India due to the USA-Iran conflict. Sammy expressed his desire to travel back home after the Windies’ T20 World Cup 2026 campaign ended last week.
The USA, Israel and Iran are engaged in a full-fledged war, which has left the Gulf and Middle Eastern region completely paralysed. Due to this, the airspace across the affected areas has been temporarily closed, leading to disruption in air travel.
Daren Sammy seeks help amid travel disruption
That being said, the West Indies were eliminated from the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 after a defeat against India in their last Super 8 contest. However, since then, the entire team has been stranded in India.
The primary reason for the delay in travelling back home is international airspace restrictions caused by the escalating Gulf conflict. Many international flights between India and the Caribbean do not travel directly.
Instead, they typically follow multi-leg routes through major Middle Eastern transit hubs such as Dubai, Doha and Abu Dhabi.
However, airspace over Dubai and Abu Dhabi is coming to a temporary halt, and the West Indies are unable to fly out of India.
Frustrated by the same, coach Daren Sammy made a cry for help on social media, saying, “I just wanna go home.”
"At least an update, tell us something. Today tmw, next week. It’s been 5 days," Daren Sammy further added.
Daren Sammy's emotional fatigue resonated with many. Moreover, the West Indies had just been eliminated from the World Cup, which already brought disappointment.
Also, after long tournaments, players are mentally drained and eager to leave. The biggest frustration wasn’t the delay. It was not knowing when they could leave.

Zimbabwe also stuck along with the West Indies
Having said that, the West Indies are not the only team to face such difficulty. Zimbabwe, which also got eliminated from the Super 8 stage, are also affected by the same aviation disruption.
Regardless, according to reports, both teams are being taken good care of by the management. The players remain accommodated in India under the supervision of the ICC and BCCI.
For now, safety remains the board’s primary concern. Until those conditions align, the team simply has to wait.
