KKR coach Shane Watson is in the headlines for something unrelated to the ongoing IPL 2026 season. In fact, some details around his past stint with Quetta Gladiators in PSL have come out that left fans shocked.

Before joining KKR, Watson was the head coach of the Gladiators. He was appointed in 2024, but after just a year-long stint, he stepped down, citing other commitments.

Shane Watson sacked due to an internal dispute with the Quetta Gladiators

Interestingly, at the time, the Quetta Gladiators amicably parted ways with Shane Watson. However, it has now been revealed that the team in fact had a dispute with the former Australian all-rounder.

Recently, the Gladiators' owner, Nadeem Omar, spoke to Fawad Alam on YouTube and revealed that the biggest issue involved Sherfane Rutherford, who temporarily left the squad due to personal reasons before returning.

“Rutherford had gone home due to personal reasons and returned after two days. Watson questioned his commitment, saying there was no guarantee he would play after leaving the squad,” Omar said.

Shane Watson allegedly questioned Sherfane Rutherford’s commitment and refused to immediately bring him back into the playing XI despite Quetta needing batting reinforcements before the playoffs.

“Even though we had already qualified for the playoffs and needed batting strength, Watson refused to pick Rutherford, calling it a disciplinary matter,” he added.

Watson's discipline culture rejected by PSL

According to the Quetta Gladiators owner, Shane Watson wanted to build a stricter dressing-room culture, while the franchise management felt that approach would not work within their environment. Hence, they chose to part ways with the Aussie after just one season as head coach in the PSL.

“Watson was focused on building a strict team culture, but I felt that approach wouldn’t work for our environment. That’s why we decided not to continue with him for the next season.”

The episode ultimately exposed a clash in leadership philosophy between Watson and the franchise hierarchy, which appears to have played a significant role in the decision to part ways before PSL 2025.

Shane Watson returned to the IPL after PSL ouster

That being said, after being sacked by the Quetta Gladiators, the legendary all-rounder Shane Watson returned to the IPL. He was appointed as the assistant coach of KKR for the 2026 season.

As a player, Watson featured in 145 IPL games, scoring 3874 runs while also picking 92 wickets. The all-rounder also played in the PSL from 2015 to 2021. He also served the Quetta Gladiators, scoring 677 runs across two seasons.

Now, with the PSL door closed, Shane Watson is fully focused on the IPL as he is guiding KKR to a playoff spot from a difficult position.
