Pakistan wicketkeeper batter Mohammad Rizwan threw away his wicket after scoring a gritty half-century against Bangladesh in the first Test ongoing at the Shere-e-Bangla Stadium in Dhaka.

In the first innings, Bangladesh put 413 runs on the board after Najmul Shanto scored a century and Mominul Haque contributed with 91 runs. Meanwhile, Pakistan also gave a befitting reply in the second innings.

Mohammad Rizwan fakes cramps after a costly dismissal

For Pakistan, debutant Azan Awais scored a century in the second innings to give a stable start. Abdullah Fazal also scored 60 before the visitors lost a couple of quick wickets.

To stabilise the innings, Mohammad Rizwan stepped up and scored a gritty 59 off 94 balls. However, against the run of play, Rizwan gifted away his wicket against Taijul Islam.

Mohammad Rizwan attempted an aggressive charge down the pitch but failed to get close to the delivery as Taijul cleverly slowed the ball through the air and shortened his length.

The Pakistan batter still went for a lofted hit straight down the ground but only managed to slice the turning ball high towards wide mid-off.

Mahmudul Hasan Joy kept calm under pressure, backtracked well and completed a neat reverse-cup catch to give Bangladesh a crucial breakthrough.

Interestingly, replays also showed Mohammad Rizwan immediately clutching his right hamstring after playing the shot, suggesting cramps or discomfort may have influenced his decision-making.

However, it could have been a tactic as well to hide his failures, as Rizwan has previously admitted that he sometimes fakes cramps on the field for his own benefit.

Pakistan trail despite a strong start

That being said, in the second innings, Pakistan reached 366/7 during Day 3 in response to the 413-run total set by Bangladesh in the first innings. Azan Awais stole the limelight with a stunning century.

Abdullah Fazal also impressed with a patient 60, while Salman Agha and Mohammad Rizwan further frustrated Bangladesh with an important 119-run partnership for the sixth wicket.

Rizwan looked set for a bigger score before falling for 59 after miscuing an aggressive shot against Taijul Islam, while Salman Agha contributed a valuable 58. Still, Pakistan trail by 47 runs.

For Bangladesh, Mehidy Hasan Miraz was the standout bowler with figures of 3/94, while Taskin Ahmed chipped in with two wickets.

Babar Azam to feature in second Test

Interestingly, Pakistan lost their star batter Babar Azam to an injury just hours before the first Test kicked off. Later, Imam-ul-Haq claimed that Babar seemed fine to him and that the doctors could take a better call.

Having said that, as per the latest rumours, Babar Azam is fit and is expected to be available for the second Test, which will kick off from May 16.

In his absence, Pakistan’s debutant Azan Awais stole the show with a century. Regardless, when Babar is next available, Pakistan will definitely have a selection headache.
