The Indian team sent the whole country into jubilation after winning the record third ICC Men’s T20 World Cup under Gautam Gambhir's coaching on Sunday in Ahmedabad.

This was the same venue where the dreaded final of the fifty-over final was played, and India sustained a crushing defeat against Australia.

For many, the ghosts of that final were buried, but some still believe that a T20 World Cup win cannot make up for a loss in the ODI World Cup final.

Former India cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar seemed to be resonating the sentiment of this section of the fans as he was seen ranking ICC titles after India’s latest win.

Sanjay Manjrekar belittles T20 World Cup as he ranks ICC titles

In one of his recent Twitter (X) post made in the evening of March 10, Manjrekar pointed out how each ICC trophy is ranked according to the sentiments of the cricket fans.

According to him, among the four trophies, the most coveted title remains the fifty-over World Cup, while the T20 World Cup was ranked even below the World Test Championship.

He wrote, “Slowly, a hierarchy/ranking of men’s ICC titles is taking shape in the minds of cricket fans. It goes something like this–

1) 50 overs World Cup

2) ICC Test Championship

3) T20 WC

4) Champions Trophy"

For many, like Manjrekar, the two-year gap between T20 World Cups devalues the competition, while the longer format remains more valuable.

Not many players get multiple shots at the fifty-over WC, but playing the T20 mega event on several occasions remains attainable. The WTC, because it is believed to be the toughest format, takes second place.

Fans criticise Sanjay Manjrekar’s opinion

The former batter, who represented India in the 1992 and 1996 World Cups, is known for his controversial opinions and is often called out by fans and termed edgy at times.

He was also once infamously called out by Ravindra Jadeja in 2019, when he had called the southpaw a bits and pieces cricketer.

This time around, the fans did not like the timing of tweeting this in the midst of the celebrations. The Indian team members were welcomed into the cities and treated like heroes, and fans are still discussing the dominant performances.

According to many, the T20 World Cup ranks above the World Test Championship and the red-ball tournament, which is played in two-year cycles, has some catching up to do.

A few of them once again felt it was an uncalled-for opinion, and some did not feel surprised by Manjrekar for coming up with another controversial take.

Focus shifts to IPL 2026

Following the conclusion of the 20-team tournament, where 55 matches were played in just over a month, the players will now get a couple of weeks of rest before they turn up for the next assignment.

For a couple of months, international cricket will take a back seat, and everyone will be involved in the IPL, starting at the end of March. All the World Cup-winning players will fight to retain their spots in the team, and some exciting young talent will look to impress to break into the side and aim at the 2028 edition and the Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
