In a significant development, the BCCI has decided to restrict Jasprit Bumrah from T20 cricket after the T20 World Cup 2026. One of India's greatest cricketers, Bumrah recently played a pivotal role in the Suryakumar Yadav-led team's historic title triumph, as they defeated New Zealand in a high-stakes final at Narendra Modi Stadium.

However, with the IPL 2026 approaching, the BCCI has decided to restrict Bumrah from the shortest format days after he emerged as the go-to man for the co-hosts, leading to a historic title triumph.

Jasprit Bumrah handed T20 setback before IPL 2026

Ace Indian speedster Jasprit Bumrah had a memorable T20 World Cup campaign on home soil. The right-arm pacer played a crucial role in his side's memorable victory, as they steamrolled the BlackCaps in a one-sided final.

Overall, Bumrah managed fourteen wickets in just eight matches at a superb economy of 6.21 and a strike rate of 12. However, as the T20 World Cup marked its conclusion, the BCCI opted to limit the seamer's participation in T20s days before the IPL 2026.

Jasprit Bumrah to focus more on Tests and ODIs

The Indian cricket team emerged victorious in the T20 World Cup 2026. After a remarkable win at home, the Men in Blue are preparing for the ODI World Cup, set to be held in the African continent in 2027.

India's head coach Gautam Gambhir recently stated that the Men in Blue would waste no time and kick off their preparations for the ODI World Cup next year very soon. Considering Jasprit Bumrah is their wrecker-in-chief with the ball in white-ball cricket, the right-arm pacer is expected to lead the Indian pace battery in the seam-friendly African conditions.

So, given that Bumrah has had several injury setbacks in the past, the BCCI has decided to monitor his workload ahead of the 50-over World Cup. With the Indian team preparing for the showpiece event, Bumrah will shift his focus from T20s to ODIs.

According to a report by PTI, the BCCI is planning to utilise Bumrah's bowling expertise in the longer formats. The fast bowler is supposed to play all of India's ODI fixtures leading up to the World Cup, while he might not be a regular face in T20 cricket.

The report also claims that the BCCI is prioritising the current World Test Championship. So, apart from playing the ODIs, Bumrah will also feature in most of India's Test matches, with the Shubman Gill-led side eyeing an entry into the final.

As playing the longer formats takes a lot of effort, the BCCI wants to reduce Jasprit Bumrah's participation in T20 cricket until the completion of the 2027 World Cup to avoid last-minute injury setbacks.

"Obviously Bumrah's fitness is as always key to any of India's global campaign and hence the Indian team management will have to be very careful and prioritise the formats. Keep Test cricket aside, which he will obviously play, but in the 50-over World Cup cycle, he will concentrate more on ODIs. There will be around 30-35 odd games and one can't take chances," a BCCI source told PTI.

Will Jasprit Bumrah miss IPL 2026?

With the BCCI imposing restrictions on Jasprit Bumrah's T20 participation, fans are curious to know whether he'll miss the upcoming IPL 2026.

However, it's worth mentioning that Bumrah generally features in most of the Mumbai Indians' matches, and if the Indian cricket board asks the MI think tank to manage his workload, we might see Bumrah getting rested or being used as an impact player on some occasions during the tournament.
