India’s ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 triumph made Suryakumar Yadav only the third Indian captain to lift the coveted trophy, as he joined the duo of MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma in the list. He is also the first of the three to do it on home soil with a thumping win over New Zealand in Ahmedabad.
Notably, the former two winners, alongside the World Cup 1983 winning captain, Kapil Dev, were also in attendance as India achieved the feat on Sunday. Dhoni and Rohit even walked out and presented the trophy in front of 100,000 people in the ground ahead of the national anthems.
As Yadav joined the elite list of Indian captains with ICC titles, he also revealed a special conversation with MS Dhoni prior to the competition and how it kept him calm throughout the proceedings.
Suryakumar Yadav opens up on chat with MS Dhoni
In his latest interview with Express Sports after the win, Yadav said that he spoke to Dhoni before the start of the tournament. During the special conversation, Dhoni showed confidence in the team and backed them to pull off the special feat if they remained courageous enough.
“I had a chat with MS Dhoni before the World Cup; he told me how to approach an ICC event. He told me that we have a good team, we just have to be courageous, and we will definitely win. His reaction after the win was amazing,” he said.
It is worthy to note that, before the 35-year-old, only Dhoni was able to win one of these ICC trophies in India. Both Kapil Dev and Sharma won their respective trophies away. Hence, the perspective on succeeding and handling pressure at home is something only Dhoni could have provided to Yadav.

Hot and cold World Cup for Suryakumar Yadav
The Indian captain started the T20 World Cup with an emphatic knock of 84* off 49 against the USA to rescue India from 77/6 to 161/9 and escaped a banana skin game. However, as the tournament progressed, the captain’s form tapered off a bit, and he ended up scoring 242 runs by the end of it.
The 242 runs came at a strike rate of 136.72, and he was the third leading run-scorer for India. While he got starts, the vintage touch of Suryakumar Yadav felt missing, and he was the only one of India’s top-7 batters with a strike rate of under 150 in the 9 innings batted.
Yadav and co. eye historic Olympic Gold after T20 World Cup
Under Suryakumar Yadav’s leadership, India are yet to drop a T20I series. They have played 52 matches and won 40, losing 8. His win percentage is the best among the captains who have at least led India in 10 T20Is, surpassing the numbers produced by MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma in the process.
In the Olympic Games 2028 in Los Angeles, cricket is set to return for the first time since Paris 1900, ending the 128-year hiatus from the most prestigious sporting event in the world. As revealed by the captain himself, the India juggernaut will now be aiming for the Olympic Gold in 2028, and the preparations will soon be underway after the IPL 2026 ends.
