Tamim Iqbal reveals financial irregularities in BCB [Source: AFP]
The dark shadows over the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) continue to bloom as the president, Tamim Iqbal, did yet another groundbreaking exposé on Thursday evening.
Speaking to the media, he talked about several financial irregularities from the recent Bangladesh Premier League season and also looked open to the idea of discontinuing the league, putting players’ future and revenue into jeopardy.
Tamim Iqbal exposes BCB’s mismanagement
On the eve of the first Test between Bangladesh and Pakistan, the former Bangladesh captain, who is currently the chief of the BCB, addressed a press conference, revealing financial irregularities and calling out the previous regime.
While doing so, he said that two BPL franchises, Sylhet Titans and Noakhali Express, did not sign the formal agreements with BCB in the BPL 2025/26 season. Furthermore, they did not fulfil a certain criterion outlined by BCB’s LOI.
“You can make mistakes. You can work towards a certain plan, but can’t make it happen, and that is a mistake, which is fine. But when you knowingly make these mistakes, that is a crime in my opinion,” the animated Tamim Iqbal said.
“If you tell franchises that the rule is a Tk 10-crore bank guarantee and then do not follow it, instead accepting a Tk 2-crore bank guarantee, and then these franchises are not making player payments, the franchises would know they can gain an advantage here since the BCB would pay the players in the end. This system has to be stopped strictly,” he added.

Tamim Iqbal to cancel BPL?
In an animated press conference, Tamim Iqbal, who is also the youngest-ever BCB president, looked disappointed in how the sport is run in the country, openly calling this mismanagement a ‘crime’.
During the presser, he shockingly said that he would rather discontinue the BPL for the time being than run it with ‘patchwork’ and brush things under the rug.
“When I said that it’s better not to hold BPL like this, I meant it. Without any reason, you have to hold BPL in a patchwork manner, taking Tk 2 crore as bank guarantee instead of Tk 10 crore; it’s better not to do it. In future, those who will come [into the board], I hope they will work on it,” he concluded.
Tamim Iqbal is currently serving as the BCB president temporarily. Since the time he took over, he has made some bold calls and has the responsibility to conduct the presidential elections within 90 days. It remains to be seen if he contests for the post later in the summer.
