Ahead of the first Test against Sri Lanka, Indian Test captain Shubman Gill revealed the team’s plan for the WTC 2027 final qualification. Currently, the men in blue are struggling in fifth place in the WTC 2025-27 standings.

India will play against Sri Lanka in the first Test of the 2-game series on August 15 at the Galle International Stadium. Before the important tour began, Gill appeared for a pre-match press conference and spilled beans on the WTC prize.

Shubman Gill refuses to give up on WTC final dream

As things stand currently, India are seated at the fifth spot on the WTC 2025-27 table with 48.15% points percentage. The WTC table is based on points percentage, rather than simply the number of matches won.

So India need to collect a high percentage of the available points from their remaining games to finish in the top 2. While the goal is tough, Shubman Gill refuses to give up on the dream of leading India to the WTC 2027 final.

“Very comfortable with the leadership role, we have been progressing well. Goal is to play the WTC final, need to win 5-6 Tests for that,” Gill said.

Notably, the WTC 2025-27 cycle is Gill’s first tournament as India’s Test captain. Hence, leading the team to the final will be a significant achievement. So, despite the odds stacked against them, Shubman Gill is confident of producing a miracle.

India’s WTC 2027 final qualification scenario

Coming back to reality, India have an atrocious task ahead of them. They have 9 Tests left in this WTC 2025-27 cycle, including a five-game Test series against Australia in early 2027.

If India win 5 or 6 of their remaining nine Tests, their PCT would improve significantly. That could put them into serious contention for the top two places. 

But winning 5-6 Tests does not automatically guarantee qualification. Other teams are also playing a good chunk of games, and if competing teams accumulate more points, India's required number of wins could increase. 

So overall, seven wins would put India in a much stronger position, although even that wouldn't mathematically guarantee a final spot. 

How did India end up in the fifth spot?

Having said that, India only have themselves to blame for their dire state in the WTC 2025-27 standings. Earlier, they drew the 5-game series against England 2-2.

While they won the 2-game Test series against West Indies, the Shubman Gill-led squad got whitewashed in the 2-game series against South Africa, which hurt their position badly. 

So now, India must fight an uphill battle. Winning most of their remaining Tests is non-negotiable. And even then, they’ll have to depend on other teams’ results to stand a chance at WTC final qualification.
