Miscommunication between two batters on a cricket field is nothing new, and such an incident occurred during Day 1 of the India vs Sri Lanka 1st Test match at Galle. The two Indian openers, KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal had a mix-up, and it resulted in an unnecessary run-out that gave Sri Lanka the first breakthrough.

Jaiswal and KL Rahul had given India a solid start after Shubman Gill won the toss and elected to bat first. The pair added 47 runs for the opening wicket before disaster struck and Jaiswal was run out in the most unfortunate way.

Huge mix up leads to Jaiswal's run-out in 1st Test

Keshara Nuwantha, the Sri Lankan debutant spinner, bowled a fuller-length ball as KL Rahul knocked the ball towards the mid-on region and wanted a quick single. Jaiswal at non-striker's end collided with Nuwantha as he tumbled and fell down.

There was a bit of hesitation between the two batters as KL Rahul had crossed the halfway line and was the first to reach the non-striker's end, while Jaiswal came in second and was the batter dismissed.

Niroshan Dickwella, the Lankan keeper, didn't take the bails off immediately as he looked at the slip fielder, probably discussing recalling Jaiswal back as he fell on the ground after colliding with their bowler.

Should Sri Lanka have recalled Jaiswal as spirit of the game questioned

Many have argued that the Sri Lankan side should have recalled Jaiswal and that they should have prevented the run-out. The Lankan keeper had a discussion with Dhananjaya de Silva regarding the same, but the hosts decided not to bring the batter back.

Judging by the situation, Sri Lanka could have altered their decision. Jaiswal was going for a quick single, but the bowler stopped him as he collided with the Indian batter, who fell to the ground. Otherwise, the single would have been completed easily.

If we go by the rules, then the hosts didn’t do anything wrong, but the spirit of the game has come into question, as the batter was run out mainly due to the mistake made by the bowler.

How the run-out is a setback for out-of-form Jaiswal

Jaiswal was looking in ominous touch in the first innings of the Galle Test before a run-out changed the outcome for him. He scored 32 off 37 balls and had played some exquisite shots in his short stint at the crease. However, this run-out would certainly haunt the Indian opener.

In the last couple of series, the left-handed batter has not been at his usual best, as he has struggled to score big runs. In 2025, he averaged just 39 in Tests, and this year, he averages a mere 24.00.

The Galle surface supported the batters, and Jaiswal had the opportunity to get back amongst the run-scorers, but the run-out led to his dismissal, and the batter missed out on a chance to regain his lost form.
