Team India is set to resume its World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27 campaign after a gap of nearly eight months through the upcoming two-match series against Sri Lanka. The series also serves as a chance for redemption for under fire head coach Gautam Gambhir.
To put that in wider context, Gambhir has received much criticism lately for India’s dwindling performance in Test cricket. Moreover, India’s three successive white-ball series losses in Ireland and England last month only intensified those calls from angry Indian cricket fans.
A recent report has now dropped a hint at Gambhir’s future with the Indian Test side, at a time when players are preparing themselves for the impending challenge.
Gautam Gambhir’s future as India’s Test coach revealed
As reported by Revsportz, Gautam Gambhir will continue to remain as Test coach of the Indian cricket team, even if the team fails to win its upcoming two-match Test series in Sri Lanka. It is learnt that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is fully backing Gambhir’s Test tenure, despite India’s underwhelming results in the format off late.

The report also suggests that there is a sense of acceptance within the BCCI in regards to Gambhir, considering the Indian cricket team is going through a transition phase in the longest format of the game.
With the sudden retirements of Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and Ravichandran Ashwin, coupled with numerous injury concerns, the board is willing to give the national side some time to recover.
However, the situation might change dramatically if the former Indian opener himself decides to step away from the role. As far as his white-ball coaching is concern, Gautam Gambhir will continue to helm Team India at least until the 2027 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup in South Africa next year.
Gautam Gambhir’s track record as India Test coach
Ever since Gautam Gambhir took over as national head coach, the Indian cricket team is yet to lose a multi-nation white-ball tournament, having won the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy, 2025 Asia Cup and the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in the space of just 14 months.
However, India’s Test performance has seen a sharp decline during his tenure. For starters, Team India suffered shambolic whitewashes at home at the hands of New Zealand and South Africa within a year. The team also conceded its BGT title back to Australia for the first time in over a decade.
Moreover, the Indian cricket team is also struggling in their race of qualifying for the final in the ongoing WTC 2025-27 cycle.
Gambhir’s India marred with injuries
In defense of Gautam Gambhir, the Indian cricket team has been struggling with injuries over the last year-and-a-half. Many experts and BCCI officials are reportedly of the opinion that Team India would not have lost its 2025 home Test series against South Africa, if captain Shubman Gill had remained fit.
Moreover, even for the upcoming two-match Test series in Sri Lanka, the national team is set to play without the services of initial squad members Jasprit Bumrah, Sai Sudharsan and Washington Sundar owing to their injury concerns.
Ultimately, the Sri Lanka series could provide Gautam Gambhir and his struggling Test side with the opportunity to silence their growing critics and begin rebuilding India’s red-ball fortunes.
