Cricket West Indies suffered a serious field safety concern during the West Indies Championship in the Leeward Islands vs Trinidad and Tobago clash at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua.

The match witnessed a dangerous moment when a delivery from fast bowler Jayden Seales struck Leeward Islands batter Jeremiah Louis on the helmet.

The ball, which behaved unpredictably due to the poor pitch conditions, reared up sharply from a good length and hit Louis, knocking him to the ground. This incident forced the umpires to abandon the match early on the third morning.

When And How Did The Phil Hughes-Like Incident Happen?

Several wickets had already fallen across the first 147 overs of the match but the pitch in Antigua had been under criticism for its uneven bounce and tacky nature, making it extremely difficult for batters to judge deliveries.

At the time of the incident, the Leeward Islands were leading Trinidad and Tobago by 96 runs. However, after being struck, Louis took a few seconds to recover before getting up on his own.

He showed visible frustration by kicking his helmet and slapping the pitch before being stretchered off. He later received medical attention and was taken to a hospital in an ambulance.

The incident caused a long delay, after which the match officials, including referee Jonathan Blades and umpires Leslie Reifer and Zahid Bassarath, held discussions with both captains, Joshua Da Silva and Justin Greaves, before deciding to call off the match.

The Phil Hughes Accident That Shocked The Cricketing World

Safety and cricket go hand in hand, and Australian cricketer Phil Hughes, who passed away on November 27, 2014, was a rare example of that philosophy that the sport now strongly upholds. At the age of 25, Hughes died two days after being struck on the neck by a bouncer during a Sheffield Shield match.

A delivery bowled by Sean Abbott hit the side of his neck, just below the helmet, causing a rare vertebral artery dissection that led to a subarachnoid hemorrhage.

This tragic incident led to significant improvements in helmet safety and other protective gear in cricket, but at what cost? Fortunately, Louis is safe and has not suffered any serious repercussions from the injury, as confirmed by Cricket West Indies in a statement.

Antigua Pitch Slammed By Officials After Horrible Injury

Despite the abandonment, the primary concern remained Louis’s injury. Leeward Islands coach Wilden Cornwall expressed his concern after seeing the batter stretchered off the field and criticised the pitch for its inconsistent behaviour throughout the three days.

"He's in the hospital at the moment. I just hope that everything goes well for him and [there is] no really serious damage. It was really devastating to see exactly what took place this morning,” he told CWI's live stream.

"To me, it wasn't given the preparation of a four-day wicket, hence we see so many players get damaged… The pitch has been misbehaving throughout the entire three days," Cornwall said.

This was not the first alarming instance, as earlier on the third morning, Seales had also dismissed Jahmar Hamilton after a delivery rose sharply to take his glove.

Trinidad and Tobago coach Rayad Emrit also voiced his disappointment, stating that the match should have been abandoned much earlier instead of waiting until the third day.

"To be blatantly honest, the bounce has been inconsistent throughout the two-and-a-half days. For me, if that's the decision, they should have made it on day one," Emrit shared.

Cricket West Indies Condemns Nasty Pitch

Cricket West Indies later released an official statement, criticising the pitch conditions and declaring it unfit for play, which ultimately led to the abandonment of the match.

"Following discussions with the curator, it was determined [by the umpires] that the pitch could not be safely repaired without creating an unfair advantage and was therefore deemed unfit to resume, resulting in the match being abandoned as a draw,” shared Cricket West Indies.

Notably, this abandonment led to a complicated reward point for the teams. Instead of declaring a winner or loser, both teams will share points based on the match situation at the time it was stopped.

Hence, since the match was abandoned, the points both teams had already earned through their performance until that moment will still count.
