The Bangladesh vs New Zealand T20I series is around the corner, and the BCB have, in a recent development, named uncapped pace-bowling all-rounder Abdul Gaffar Saqlain in the 15-member squad for the first two T20Is with notable omissions of Taskin Ahmed and Mustafizur Rahman.
Bangladesh is set to have a busy international calendar this year, and this move to include an uncapped player clearly indicates the team's philosophy to test bench strength instead of focusing solely on ICC points.
New Faces Get Opportunity To Shine In New Zealand T20Is
The 23-year-old Saqlain, who previously featured in three T20 matches for Bangladesh during the 2023 Asian Games, gets this opportunity alongside another talent, Ripon Mondol, who has been garnering accolades in the Bangladesh Premier League.
Abdul Saqlain earns his maiden national call-up after impressing the selectors with his dual skills, possessing solid right-arm pace and the ability to clear the ropes with lower-order power hitting.

This has encouraged the selectors to believe that his profile now fits the modern T20 template that countries like India, Australia, and England have been following for a while.
Notable Inclusions And Omissions From Bangladesh T20I Squad vs New Zealand
Led by captain Litton Das, the T20I squad will also include prominent names like Parvez Hossain Emon, Tanzid Hasan, Shamim Hossain, Towhid Hridoy, Mahedi Hasan, and Shoriful Islam.
The remarkable pace trio of Mustafizur Rahman, Taskin Ahmed, and Nahid Rana being rested for the first two matches of the three-game series with Saif Hassan being named the vice-captain.
Notably, Mustafizur, Taskin, and Nahid have been rested for different reasons. While Taskin and Nahid have been playing the ODI series against New Zealand, Mustafizur Rahman will leave for the Pakistan Super League 2026 to rejoin Lahore Qalandars in the squad.
BCB Experimenting With New Faces To Test Bench Strength
This has also given the BCB the freedom to experiment with new faces in the Bangladesh T20I squad, like Saqlain, as shared by Habibul Bashar Sumon, the chairman of the selection panel of the BCB. Speaking about the rationale behind these selections, Habibul was elaborate.
"You have noticed we have included two new faces in Ripon Mondol and Abdul Gaffar Saqlain. Of course, Ripon is playing well, we can utilise his wicket-taking skills. As for Saqlain, we were looking for a bowling all-rounder, that’s why we picked him," Bashar said as quoted by The Daily Sun.
Regarding Nahid Rana and Taskin Ahmed, Bashar was clear about resting them after the ODI series, as he wants them fresh ahead of the Pakistan Test matches.
"Obviously we wanted to try some new faces in the T20 side, that’s why we rested Nahid Rana, and also Taskin Ahmed. Nahid needs rest after playing the One Day International series (against New Zealand) and before the Test matches,” Bashar added.
