PCB’s PSL 2027 Schedule Window Shift Triggers Fresh IPL Fear

There is nothing new in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) and its fear of losing world-class overseas players to the Indian Premier League (IPL). On Sunday, it appeared that the PCB would make a surprise move to eliminate the same old concern once and for all.

As revealed by Cricinfo, the PCB is all set to prepone the PSL 2027 schedule to January. The Mohsin Naqvi-led side had already discussed the subject with all eight PSL teams at the recent governing council meeting in London on September 1.

RawalpindiZ Put Forward PSL 2027 Schedule Idea

Walee Technologies, which owns RawalpindiZ and PSL’s broadcasting rights in Pakistan until 2029, reportedly pitched the idea at the meeting.

Even though the reasons Walee Technologies cited for shifting the PSL 2027 schedule were logical, there is no denying that they fear players may choose the IPL over PSL on any given day for better career opportunities.

"The proposal to hold the PSL early next year was floated by Walee Technologies, the media rights holder, because of limited advertising revenue in the April-May window as it falls after Ramazan, when companies exhaust their marketing and TV ad budgets," the Cricinfo report read.

"However, there has also been concern from owners about the broadcast revenue owed to the franchises being paid in full regardless of which window it is played in and the state of Walee's advertising budgets, after underwhelming financial returns from TV rights. Under the PSL's agreement with the franchises, eight teams get 95% of broadcast revenue from the Central revenue pool," it added.

PSL Schedule Window Over The Years

The Pakistan Super League began in 2016, and there were nine back-to-back editions held in the February-March window until 2024. However, in the previous two seasons, PSL took place in the April-May window, clashing directly with the IPL schedule.

Usually, IPL happens in the March-May window. However, two IPL seasons (2020 & 2021) were disrupted by COVID-19 and thus took place in the October-November window.

As IPL is the largest global T20 league across the world by far, PSL, unsurprisingly, does not get the luxury of signing superstar players. Therefore, they had to find out who failed to get an IPL contract to fill the overseas quota.

However, if the PSL 2027 schedule moves ahead to January, the problem of players’ availability will be solved, at least in terms of competing with the IPL.

PSL To Face Hurdles From BBL And SA20

Nevertheless, eliminating the IPL challenge won’t make life any easier for the PCB. They will have two other popular T20 leagues: South Africa’s SA20 and Australia’s Big Bash League (BBL), which will take place in the same window, albeit in different ways.

While the SA20 2027 will get underway on January 17 and run till February 21, BBL 2027 will be held between December 12 and January 26. Thus, it can be safely said that the concern will remain intact for PCB regarding getting the popular profiles.
