R Sai Kishore, the left-arm spinner, has been in outstanding form in the ongoing County Championship, and the wily bowler knocked on the Indian selectors’ door with a breathtaking spell in the game between Gloucestershire and Derbyshire.
With R Ashwin retired and Ravindra Jadeja in the twilight of his career, India needs someone to support Manav Suthar in red-ball cricket, and perhaps Sai Kishore could be the answer to India’s spin problem.
Playing for Gloucestershire, the Indian spinner almost single-handedly helped his team beat the opponent with a magical fifer.

The left-arm spinner has always been a tricky prospect for batters, and in Derbyshire's first innings, he scalped two wickets and gave away just 59 runs. However, his best was yet to come as he dismantled the opposition in the second innings.
The wicket in Bristol started to assist the spinners, and Sai Kishore opened the bowling in the second innings as he picked up 5 wickets for just 20 runs inside 18 overs to bundle out Derbyshire for a paltry 105.
Interestingly, all 5 of his wickets came in a single spell as he gave away just 6 runs in eight overs and broke the backbone of the Derbyshire batting lineup.

Gloucestershire set a target of 319, and courtesy of the Indian bowlers’ spell, his team won the County Championship match by a whopping 213 runs.

Sai Kishore has been grinding in the Indian domestic circuit and also in the County Championship, and he has once again put forward his name for selection in the Indian Test team.

R Ashwin retired midway through the BGT 2024-25 season, and India have yet to fill his void in Tests. Moreover, Jadeja is not getting any younger as India are looking for his long-term like-for-like replacement.
Kuldeep Yadav is not in the scheme of things, and Saransh Jain has looked unimpressive on his debut. With only Suthar’s position guaranteed in Tests, India does need another quality spin-bowling option, and Sai Kishore could be a solid option.
Moreover, the Indian star has the stats to back his selection, as the cricketer has done wonders in red-ball cricket.
R Sai Kishore's outstanding first-class and County stats
The 29-year-old spinner has been one of the best first-class bowlers in the Indian circuit. The wily bowler has played in 57 first-class matches and has taken 236 wickets, at an outstanding average of 24.15. Moreover, he has 15 five-wicket hauls in first-class cricket, and the player certainly has the credentials to play in the Test team.
The Tamil Nadu-born spinner has played just 3 County Championship matches this season, and he has already stamped his authority by picking up 13 wickets, including a match-winning fifer vs Derbyshire.
He averages 23.08 in the ongoing tournament, and the player has certainly done enough to guarantee himself a place in the Indian Test team for the upcoming matches.
