The organisers of SA20 have officially announced the schedule for the 2027 season. The fifth edition of South Africa's popular T20 league will take place from January 17 to February 21, 2027. 

Fans can once again expect exciting cricket as six franchises battle for the title across different venues in South Africa.

SA20 Defending Champions To Play Opening Match

The tournament will begin with a thrilling clash between defending champions Sunrisers Eastern Cape and last season's runners-up Pretoria Capitals. Notably, the SA20 2027 opening match will be played at St George's Park in Gqeberha on Sunday, January 17.

Meanwhile, the other two playoff teams from the previous season, Paarl Royals and Joburg Super Kings, will face each other on the second day of the tournament at Paarl's home ground.

While announcing the much-awaited schedule, SA20 Commissioner Graeme Smith expressed his excitement about the upcoming season.

"Announcing the SA20 fixtures is always a big moment for us, it’s the first major milestone ahead of the new season and it means the wheels are in motion for us as we build towards an incredible month of cricket,” Graeme Smith said.

"There is no better way to start Season 5 than with a repeat of one of the most thrilling finals in our history. Sunrisers Eastern Cape and Pretoria Capitals served up a classic in Cape Town last season, and it's fitting that they're the two teams out in the middle when the season gets underway in Gqeberha on 17 January 2027," Smith said.

SA20 Schedule Adjusted Due To ENG vs SA ODI Series

Meanwhile, it is also important to note that the SA20 2027 tournament schedule has been slightly adjusted this season. It will start later than usual to avoid a clash with England's ODI series against South Africa.

There will be four Saturday double-headers on January 23, January 30, February 6, and February 13.

The final league-stage match of SA20 2027 will be played on February 14 between MI Cape Town and Pretoria Capitals at Newlands.

The Qualifier and Eliminator matches will be held in Paarl and Johannesburg, while the SA20 2027 final will take place at Newlands, Cape Town, on February 21, where the new champions will be crowned.

It is worth mentioning that the City of Cape Town and Newlands will host SA20 Final for the second year running and third since the inception of the league.

History Of SA20 League

It is important to note that SA20 is organised by Cricket South Africa (CSA). Before SA20, CSA launched the T20 Global League in 2017, although it was postponed due to sponsorship and broadcasting issues.  

It was later replaced by the Mzansi Super League, which lasted only two seasons before being cancelled because of the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2022, CSA launched SA20 through Africa Cricket Development (ACD). 

Notably, the tournament officially made its debut in 2023 and features six teams, all owned by IPL franchises. 

So far, Sunrisers Eastern Cape have been the most successful team, winning three titles, while MI Cape Town have lifted the trophy once, claiming their maiden title in the league's third season.
