Bangladesh had a nightmare outing in Mackay as Australia completed a crushing innings-and-51-run victory in the second Test. The visitors were plucked away for just 64 in their first innings, with Mitchell Starc ripping through the batting order with a sensational 6/12.

Bangladesh never recovered from being reduced to 12/5 and were eventually dismissed inside 34 overs. Bangladesh's second innings collapsed for 95, with only Najmul Hossain Shanto and Mushfiqur Rahim offering meaningful resistance.

The result was not just another heavy defeat for Bangladesh. The Mackay Test produced a collection of deeply unwanted records, with the visitors repeatedly finding themselves on the wrong side of the history books.

Let's take a look at all the shameful records Bangladesh attained in the Mackay Test.

1) Bangladesh records its fourth-lowest total in Test history

The most obvious stain from the Mackay Test was Bangladesh's first-innings score of just 64. Starc needed only 10 overs to tear through the Bangladesh batting order, finishing with astonishing figures of 6/12. The 64 all out is now the fourth-lowest total in Bangladesh's Test history.

Lowest Innings Totals for Bangladesh in Tests:

  • 43/10 vs West Indies, North Sound, 2018
  • 53/10 vs South Africa, Durban, 2022
  • 62/10 vs Sri Lanka, Colombo (PSS), 2007
  • 64/10 vs Australia, Mackay, 2026*
  • 80/10 vs South Africa, Gqeberha, 2022

Bangladesh were virtually dismantled before it had a chance to establish itself. Four of their first six batters failed to score, and the team was 12/5 within the opening seven overs.

2) Four Bangladesh batters register ducks in the same innings against Australia

Bangladesh's first innings also produced another unwanted first. Shadman Islam, Tanzid Hasan, Najmul Hossain Shanto and Litton Das all fell without scoring, meaning four Bangladesh batters were dismissed for ducks in the same innings against Australia for the first time in Test history.

The visitors were reduced to 12/5, with four of their top six failing to put a single run on the board. This was also the 10th time both openers of a team had been dismissed for ducks in the same Test innings against Australia.

3) Australia bowl Bangladesh out faster than ever before

Bangladesh's first innings lasted just 34 overs, creating another unwanted record against Australia. The Australians had never previously dismissed Bangladesh in a Test innings in fewer overs.

Fewest Overs Taken by Australia to Bowl Out Bangladesh in a Test Innings:

  • 34.0 overs – Mackay, 2026 (64)*
  • 42.2 overs – Darwin, 2003 (97)
  • 50.0 overs – Fatullah, 2006 (148)

The previous record had stood for more than two decades. Australia dismissed Bangladesh for 97 in 42.2 overs at Darwin in 2003, but Starc and company smashed that mark in Mackay by completing the job more than eight overs quicker.

4) Bangladesh openers fall for ducks for the fourth time

The nightmare began right at the top of Bangladesh's batting order. Shadman Islam was caught by Cameron Green off Starc after facing just one delivery. Tanzid Hasan followed shortly afterwards, caught by Beau Webster off the same bowler for another duck.

This was only the fourth time Bangladesh had lost both openers for ducks in the same Test innings.

Both Bangladesh Openers Dismissed for Ducks in a Test Innings:

Tamim Iqbal & Imrul Kayes vs India, Mirpur, 2010

Tamim Iqbal & Shamsur Rahman vs Zimbabwe, Mirpur, 2014

Mahmudul Hasan Joy & Tamim Iqbal vs Sri Lanka, Mirpur, 2022

Shadman Islam & Tanzid Hasan vs Australia, Mackay, 2026*

With both openers gone without scoring and Shanto following for another duck, Bangladesh had lost three wickets without adding a run after the opening wicket. By the time Litton departed, the scoreboard read 12/5.

5) Bangladesh become the first team to be bowled out twice below 100 in a Test for 21 years

Bangladesh were dismissed for 64 in the first innings and 95 in the second, giving them two totals below 100 in the same Test. This was the first time Bangladesh had been bowled out for under 100 twice in a Test. More remarkably, they became the first team in 21 years to suffer the same fate in Test cricket.

The second innings initially offered some hope after Shanto and Mushfiqur Rahim put together Bangladesh's most substantial partnership of the match. Shanto scored 31 and Mushfiqur remained unbeaten on 29, but Australia's attack eventually finished the job.

6) Bangladesh finish the Test with only 159 runs across two innings

Bangladesh scored just 64 in the first innings and 95 in the second, giving them a combined match aggregate of only 159 runs. That put them among the lowest combined team totals in the statistical record for a Test match.

Lowest Combined Team Totals in a Test Match:

  • 159 – Bangladesh vs Australia, Mackay, 2026*
  • 158 – Zimbabwe vs New Zealand, Harare, 2005
  • 112 – Pakistan vs Australia, Sharjah, 2002
  • 175 – England vs New Zealand, Christchurch, 1984
  • 121 – New Zealand vs England, Lord's, 1958

Bangladesh's 159 runs came across two complete innings, meaning they averaged fewer than 80 runs per innings.

7) Litton Das becomes the latest Bangladesh batter to register a pair against Australia

Litton Das endured a particularly miserable Test in Mackay, getting dismissed for a duck in both innings. He fell lbw to Mitchell Starc for a first-ball duck in Bangladesh's first innings before being caught by Beau Webster off Starc for another duck in the second.

The result was Litton's name being added to an unwanted list of Bangladesh batters who have registered a pair against Australia in Test cricket.

Bangladesh Players with a Pair vs Australia:

  • Alok Kapali, Darwin, 2003
  • Mohammad Ashraful, Cairns, 2003
  • Enamul Haque jnr, Fatullah, 2006
  • Litton Das, Mackay, 2026*

The timing could hardly have been worse for Litton since Bangladesh were already in deep trouble after their top order collapsed in the first innings, and his second duck came with the team still struggling to build any sort of momentum in the chase.

8) Mominul Haque moves to the top of Bangladesh's unwanted Test duck list

Mominul Haque also found himself on an unwanted personal leaderboard after the Mackay Test. His duck in Bangladesh's second innings took his career tally to 19 ducks in Test cricket, moving him clear at the top of Bangladesh's list.

Most Ducks for Bangladesh in Tests:

  • 19 – Mominul Haque*
  • 16 – Mohammad Ashraful
  • 16 – Khaled Ahmed
  • 13 – Mushfiqur Rahim
  • 13 – Taijul Islam

Mominul's latest duck came almost immediately after the second innings began. He walked in at 5/1 and was bowled by Mitchell Starc for a single-ball duck, leaving Bangladesh two wickets down for just five runs.
